Telkom will install ADSL at my place on Sa.
I have my own modem/router. And I told then that so that I don't want there 2 year contract.
When the Techie phone for the appointment, he was very astonished to find that I don't have my on micro filters as well. I thought that is part of their installation? Is it not?

Where can I find some? He was not really of any help and where I can get and it also did not sound asif he had any. He was going to find out though.

Will the switch over to ADSL damage any of my phone/fax equipment if I have no filter. He says not, but that the filter is for my modem and that I would not be able to use the modem without the filter installed.

Thanks

As far as I know the filter will allow you to use phone/fax while surfing .. period. I seldomly make phone calls on my phone if at all and I dont have a filter installed. I dont understand why telkom doesn't provide these filters for free  ... but yep you have to buy one!

Hi Louis

The microfilter is there to protect your analog equipment from the ADSL signals (see Telkom ADSL tech info).

So no, it's not for the modem (that has a built in high pass filter). In fact, the modem wouldn't work since the microfilter is a low pass filter and would filter out exactly what your modem needs...

Filters are placed between your phone line and the telkom socket. What it does is supposedly block out the router's frequencies so that you get a clean telephone line. I was without one for two weeks, no problem, phone has just a little more static. It's probably more essential if you have a fax or so. Just don't put it between your router and the socket.

You can get a filter from a Telkom branch, IF they have stock. A very friendly lady gave me one for free (shh!).

Thanks. That is how I had it as well.
I also heard that some Telkom shops sell the filters, but that they are out of stock.
At last they came to install the ADSL today! Hey!
(Saber) : also got a filter form the same shop you got it, it seems. :)
