Morning All,

I have applied to Telkom to get an ADSL line(4mbps) installed. I would just like to know what the norm is to getting this done. I was told by Telkom that it should be 6 weeks. Is this true??:(

if you already have a normal non-prepaid telephone line its quicker...2-14 work days..

you people are lucky...back in the day i waited for 8 months!

also i hope you took self-install - much quicker

@MrNutz, The folks that stayed there before me had an ADSL line, but it was cancelled due to non payment. I was told that I would have to apply for a new line  I mean the physical line is there - plug and all. Anyway I am now waiting to see what they are going to install. I have only asked for the installation at this point. I am looking at Axxess to take over the ADSL line and at getting one of their data products.

It should be less than a week if the infrastructure is there. Installation in this case just means that they plug in the router and microfilter after the ADSL port has been activated at the exchange. I opted for self-install and had working ADSL within 5 days.

@ dj jyno I told Telkom that I will be getting my own router/modem. There should be no hold up there. The filter is also still connected to the plug - although I wont be getting a phone at all. Only want the ADSL line for internet. :)

@ OnryO Gee, that was fast. Too fast for Telkom. But I see you are in Cape Town - maybe that is the difference. I wonder how long I will have to wait here in Joburg!! :(

I'm in Cape Town. Have had a nightmare with Telkom.

Step 1 - phoned T to find out if I can get ADSL in my area. They say I can, so I order home line installation (normal phone, not adsl). This gets installed 2-3 weeks later.

Step 2- Phone and order ADSL (I figured 2 orders would just confuse them or I would get one before the other). T now tell me that although there is ADSL available in the area, I can't get it. ??? Not enough lines apparently. Fine, I order WiMax.

Step 3 - Get phonecall last week to confirm installation of WiMax will take place soon as the order is now with the tech guys.

Step 4 - This morning I follow up on WiMax order (placed almost 6 weeks ago), get told there aren't enough 'parts/modems/whatever' and have to wait a few more weeks.

Anyone have any advice on what else I can do to get ADSL? I need access to local news servers. This waiting game is ridiculous.

I am looking at Axxess to take over the ADSL line...

NO, NO, NO!

Never let an ISP take over the line, it will seriously &#@! with your life if you decide to move on in the future and trust me you will at some stage.

Leave the line with Telkom as it gives you the freedom to switch ISPs at the flick of your fingers without cancelling the line, reapplying for the line etc.

It's kinda like using a email address linked to a specific ISP, we just dont do that anymore, we use gmail as it gives you freedom to move with diffrent ISPs.

Trust me on this one.

@ ponder I have spoken to Axxess in the mean time. Looks like they have stopped the transfer of Telkom ADSL lines in the mean time. (This is due to a Axxess - Telkom issue/mud slinging between the two of them). So it looks like I will have to keep Telkom onboard with the ADSL line and whoever I decide to go with for the data package. I still feel Axxess has better options than most other ISP's at this stage.

Anyone got any other views on the matter?? I look forward to hearing from you. ;)

Back in the day I waited two days. I called a 'friend' :D

I have my line with Telkom plus the 1st GB of bandwidth and I use Axxess for any additional needs (Local prepaid, 626 etc).

The way that I figure it, Telkom ultimately has to do any work on the physical ADSL line if there are problems. I am sure that they would prioritise their own customers before meeting their obligations to other ISPs like Axxess.

ordered mine on a Saturday, and 3 working days later i had dsl... but they will screw up somewhere. like they forgot to verify my line, but that just took 30 min. other than that, im happy...

I don't believe what I am reading here. This really and truelly doesn't sound like Telkom at all!!. I presume that all the above installations have been done by Telkom??

I received a sms on Monday with my Ref. No.(25/05/2009). Since then not a word. :(

I suppose I can follow up with 10219 if I don't hear anything from them. . . .

From order to installation to verification.... 4 hours.

Also more or less the same. I was at the Telkom shop. Ordered it, went home after some shopping and the sync light was burning. Did verification and voila.

Phone the Telkom Business call centre, they are much more helpful, they are quicker and they answer their phones. And they still help you, even though its a residential installation.

try the option of getting the system to call u back if you dont wanna hold on.

othewise go online and log a fault/complaint.

I am a Telkom employee, all I can tell you is that Telkom is suppose to make an appointment with you, and that appointment must be kept by the installer.
Telkom is currently working with a huge backlog, due to staff shortages.
