Hi all, newbie to adsl here. I just got adsl put in today by telkom with axxess as my isp. Everything started off fine but when I wanted to chat on mirc or download anything on dc++, I started running into problems.

Firstly with mirc, it takes a really long time to connect and when it finally does, it sometimes seems to work for a while and then just stops. I dont get disconnected but I know that something is wrong because no one replies to my chatting and all the chatting in the channels just stops. On a side note, when I check my local info in mirc it sais that my local host is ndn-***-***-***.telkomadsl.co.za shouldnt it be saying axxess? or is that correct?
Any ideas what is going on here?

Then, the problems with dc++. Well I iether cant connect to some of the hubs that I normally connect to (prior to adsl), or when I connect, I cant seem to download from anyone. It tries to connect to the various people and then sais 'connection timeout'. Some of the hubs also log me in, but then sais that 10.0.*.* is not my real ip address, then it tells me my correct ip address, and kicks me off the hub. Do I have to do anything differently to be able to use dc++ now with adsl. I briefly read something online about port forwarding,...whats that all about?

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. I thaught maybe it was something to do with it being the end of the month and everyone reaching their caps,...but that shouldn't affect me since I just started using adsl for the first time today.

thanks.

edited to add: I just noticed now that if I go to some sites it doesnt allow me to enter because it doesnt allow annonymous web surfing. It seems to think im trying to hide my real ip address or something. Could that have anything to do with my problems with mirc and dc++?

Telkom is really the ISP, you are connecting through telkom. Axxess is just a reseller of Telkom's packages.

Oh ok, thanks. that makes sense.

Now another thing ive just found. I cant send files on mirc using dcc. I can recieve files, but not send them. Geez this is getting annoying.

When I was using isdn I had the same problem, but i just had to go into my settings of the dialup connecion and remove the firewall. But i cant do that with adsl since there is no dialup. ARGH!!

Im using winXP pro by the way.

Any other ideas anyone?

You should have a network connection -- view your network connections and there you can right click to find the properties and under advanced is the firewall. But I would not recommend switching off your firewall ... i would rather suggest configuring the firewall to allow the port that mirc dcc uses -- no idea what port is used for dcc

if you install the latest mirc and have win xp SP2 with that security center thingy it autofills it for you

Ok, thanks. ill download the latest mirc and see if that helps.

Any ideas on why dc++ is not working? Ive tried connecting using active and passive mode. But I still cant download anything from anyone else.

Thanks for the help guys. I havent had time to give portforwarding another try yet, but ill try on the weekend. Ive read up on it so ive got a good idea of what its all about and how to do it. But one thing concerns me is that you cant set a static ip with adsl since your ip gets changed once a day. Which means every day you will have to set up your port forwarding again based on your new ip? am I right?

Is this really all necessary to be able to use p2p progams like dc++. are there any programs that I can use without doing all this? Does bittorrent also require all this missioning?

Thanks again!!

The static ip that is talked about here is not the ip address of your router but your pc that is connected to your router where your P2P apps run. Normally your PC gets its IP address via DHCP from the router. Just setup a static IP address in the same subnet (255.255.255.0) as your router. Something like 192.168.1.xxx would be fine.

Just for clarity your router has 2 IP addresses - one internal and static (192.168.1.100 for ex) and one external which is dynamic and is obtained from your ISP everytime it reconnects.

The static IP is on the internal side of your router. So basically it means if you are going to forward ports to your PC (basically by passing the Firewall)... Your PC must have a Static IP Address. ie: 192.168.0.2

This is because when you setup the port forwarding you will have to tell your router where to send the data from those ports, and you will give it an IP address on your side of the network. If you are using DHCP then everytime you turn on your PC you "could" have a different IP, and then your router will ignore the incoming requests.

If you are the only person on your network.. there is a 99% chance you will always get the SAME ip address from the DHCP on your router (if its enabled) so dont worry. Or f the router is advanced enough, you can set it up that it allocated your specific Mac address the same IP everytime you log in

EDIT: How did I know somebody would reply while I was typing :)

There were some people that were having trouble with IRC disconnects on Ethereal and they said they jsut had to change the router settings from route to bridge

Lol RisseN, looks like u got thrown into the deep end of Telkom ADSL on ur first day... From personal experience, telkom ADSL is like this - unreliable. When u get days like ur having now, when pretty much nothing works on ur DSL connection, u just have to wait. Some days i can't connect to IRC, MSN, dc++ or torrents, some days i can ;)... So basically there isn't much u can do but walk away from ur PC for a few hours and do something constructive... :P

Just remind urself who is providing ur ADSL service and patiently wait and the problem should soon rectify itself...

Well, I still havent been able to get port forwarding to work on this frieken marconi telkom router!!!!

I spoke to a guy from work and he said that you can also set your connection up in such a way so that it is basically a dial up. So I set up a ppp connection and just dial up everytime I want to get online and dont use the router as a router. Apparently then you dont need to bother with port forwarding. So im busy trying to get that to work, but no luck yet.

Ive created a normal dial up connection in xp which asks for my username/password, but then it tries to connect and never actually does. Do I have to change anything in the router settings before setting up the ppp?

Need to set the router to bridged or modem mode

You must just remember that you loose all security features provided by the router when doing this.

Not only secruity features.. You lose all features. No more DHCP server (if you use it) No anything. It becomes like your old 56k modem, it dials in and thats all it does

Thanks. Yes I realize that I will lose all the features of the router. But I would just like to be able to use some of my p2p programs and then when I have time ill continue to try and get port forwarding to work. But at least then I can swap between normal router and bridge mode once I know that brigde mode will work.

Im getting a bit annoyed here, you'd think that by being someone who works for a software company and has been involved in IT for 8+ years I would be able to configure a frieken router. Argh!!
