We have just opened a branch of our company in PE (well, been open for a few months). Have an ADSL line installed, but need to run an application based on our Joburg server over a netwrok. The requirements as laid out by the IT department in Amstetten is as follows:

Requirements:

  1. The CPE (customer premise equipment) has to offer an Ethernet port for our equipment.
  2. The Internet Access has to be 'always on' (no sleep mode)
  3. No manual login for the customer: There should be no Dial Up or Username/Password necessary to establish the connection (as used with PPPOE or PPTP)
  4. It requires at least one static, public IP address, which we can use for our equipment. The IP address data that's communicated to us needs to include the default gateway and subnet mask.
  5. No port blocking. The Internet Access has to be transparent and allow VPN tunnels.

What are the best options in terms of products available for ADSL (we are not looking at installing dedicated data lines as we have in our other branches due to the cost factor given the branch is basically a satellite of our Cape Town branch, but is far enough away to warrant the need to run the program locally as opposed to parent branch level).

TIA

I'm no expert but I would suggest Open Web's Vodacom Business account with fix IP address , or maybe contact IS to get some fixed IP offerings from them

Sorry RVFmal - didn't see this one.

You are definteily after a 4MB ADSL Static IP account.
Whoever you chose to resell it to you then I would suggest ensuring it's either an IS or Vodacom account.

Only problem with both are that you need to sign up for 12 months and use their routers. Although from your list of requirements it shouldn't be a problem for you as they both meet the critera.

If you only require the 1 Static IP then Vodacom will be a little cheaper and you can chose one of 3 routers to either buy, lease to own, or rent. The pricing from Vodacom is slightly more complex for that but it does work out a bit cheaper than the IS 5-Static IPs and 10 Fax-to-email numbers.

I'll PM you with our the pricing breakdown so you can judge for yourself.

There is an important cautionary note that i'd add to this though.
If you are looking at transferring data across an ADSL line you need to understand that your up bandwidth and down bandwidth are very different. Be aware that you can't use both at the same time without killing your line. i.e. You can't upload 512kbps of data and expect to be able to download a thing. There are a couple of boring reasons for that and the only way to get good up and down speeds is via a leased line. Howevr, the pricing you'd need to pay for that is way too steep.

Would you also be managing the VPN?
