Hi All,

I see on the hellkom site there are a few ADSL ISPs listed. Unfortunatelly none of them have 24/7 support ... I mailed a few on friday evening and still no replies and most of the numbers even the 086 ones forward to cell phones ...

Does this mean that most of these guys are 1 (or 2) man shows ?
Is it viable to go with those kind of people or rather fork over the extra R100 and go for Mweb or Tiscali with real 24/7 support ...

Note: I'm no trying to stir I'm just asking as I'm currently on the lookout for an ADLS ISP ...

Txs

To be honest ADSL a funny beast, it work or it does'nt. Thats why ODS does not have 24/7 support for it. We have engineers who will take a call 24/7 on there cell phones, if a there is a mail problem, but as we run clustered mail server the chance of a mail problem is 1 in a million, however they are there is there is a problem.

So you saying that the ONLY thing that an ADSL ISP can take care of is a mail problem ??

Does that mean that all my connectivity problems I have to address to the "In order to provide you with excellent service" telkom ... 'special' .... people

That's not good ... So am I correct in understanding that all ADSL ISPs do is resell telkom's service ...

On the other hand I guess it's good as then you can go with the cheapest ISP as you will probably get the same service as with the expensive guys (except the mail [:)])

i run my own mail and web servers altough i use suck teck now [there support sucks] i only ever had to report a line fault to telkom after hours ... besides the lines run into SAIX so unless you having a problem with the ISP's web/mail server support is not needed ...

You are correct. Though in theory, if you have a problem you should report it to your ISP who will then in turn take it up with Telkom. That ISP could be TelkomSA or any of the others. And face it, if they should in theory have a better relationship with Telkom than you and therefore be in a better position to get resolution. If you have a line problem you should take it up with Telkom itself, just like you would if you have a telephone line problem.

This is completley correct. The ISP can report the problem for you, however, they cannot monitor it all the time as you IP change all the time etc, so YIP Telkom is the only one when it comes to line faults. SO go for the cheapest.
