ADSL Issue

So we've been having issues lately with slow speeds and disconnections. This morning I reset the router and suddenly the modulation switched over to ADSL 2+. HTTP times out 9/10 times I refresh the page however P2P and IM seems to run just fine. Phoned a technician at Mweb and he told me that it has something to do with the ports at the Telkom Exchange and I now have to phone Telkom. A little while later the internet came to life again, but it was short lived. A little while later I started getting browser error pages from Mweb telling me I've used the maximum number of concurrent connections...Quite strange I thought as we've only got one router, therefore only one connection. I doubt it could be bandwidth theft because our Wireless is properly secured with a 64bit key. We only joined Mweb on Friday. Why all the issues? Mweb Ops, please help out?

Thanks!

ISP: Mweb 4096 Uncapped.
Router: Telkom 5102G (is it ADSL 2+ capable?)

None of the exchanges in SA support adsl2 as far as I know.

Try hardcoding your dns to SAIX/IS or Google DNS. This business about http not loading but IM working sounds like a DNS issue.

If nobody here provides a solution, then go grab a single gig of WebAfrica/Whatever cap and see if that works. That way you can work out whether you should be shouting at MWeb or Telkom. Bit of a last resort solution though since its expensive.

excuse my lack of knowledge, but could you explain to me how to do the hardcoding?

Here's a screenshot of my router's configuration. You can see there that it has been set to ADSL 2. Weird.

Disable the ADSL2+ modulation and ensure that it's using G.dmt modulation instead.

Also, I've noticed that your upload rate was 511 kbps instead of 512 kbps.

What probably happened with your Mweb account was that the disconnect didn't register properly, so it looked for Mweb as if you tried to make a second connection. If you wait a few minutes (5 or so), then the disconnected connection would've timed out at Mweb's side and then it won't look as if you're trying to establish a second connection on the same account.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. how would the OS influence the internet connection though?

Pada, I was wondering about that 511kpbs. I switched the modulation back to G.dmt as well as switching back to the Mweb account, but I'm still getting the concurrent connections error. I've PMed the Mweb Rep here on MyADSL. Awaiting his response.

Look under the config page where you put in your username & pwd. There should be a section on DNS. Its probably on automatic. Set it to 8.8.8.8 save and reset router. If it doesn't fix it change it back.

@Pada: That normal. Mine is off by 1 kbps too.

Odd..I've got Mweb connectivity again, but seems to be local only websites.

If you only have local connectivity, try switching the realm (last part of the username) from @dslmweb.co.za to @mweb.co.za

Switching to mweb.co.za realm would give you a Telkom/SAIX IP address and would be limited to 30GB. I think Mweb have done this due to Seacom being down...

@HavocXphere: thanks.

ah thanks for the help guys. I phoned tech support and they sorted out the problem.

xp sometimes has a connectivity issue with telkom modems.

ah issue was that I switched between a Telkom ADSL and Mweb Account and Mweb didn't register the change, therefore I kept receiving error pages which stated "Maximum Concurrent Connections". I phoned Mweb Tech Support and they just reset the connection for me from their side.
