This threadis for all ADSL issues in the Ridgeway area ,South of Jhb. I have a 1mb line that used to get speeds up 384kb/s at times, seems to have settled down for now over the past week.

*bump*

i too live in Ridgeway (Donavon street), so heres what i know

Ridgeway connects to Chrisville for adsl, this is pretty far, chrisville is just past robertsham. My line used to connect at 4meg, then had some line issues and downgraded me to 3meg. worked fine till earlier this week (after the thunderstorms), its now terrible. bad attenuation, super slow speeds.

Have logged a fault and hoping to get telkom to fix it up. That said, this is the 2nd fault i logged this week, they closed the last one as they saw 'line was connecting' -

Anyway, some glimmer of good news.

Techie mentioned they are going to upgrade the telkom exchange on Swartgoud, the telkom box is nearby the corner of Swartgoud and Fiona street, there's a large plot of land for sale, its outside this place. Apparently they'll be upgrading this to an ADSL dslam either in November or early next year. Should result in higher speeds and hopefully a more reliable adsl network in our area.

Great!! any idea if this upgrade, happened . We had a bad storm and now my dsl speeds have plummeted ! , Telkom Adsl checkers says max speed at my exchange is 1mb , and you on 4mb ?

Anyone experiencing slow speeds after today's storm ?

hehe

Absolutely horrible speed (down to 1meg from usual sync of 3meg), scratching voice calls, intermittent connection

as of 28 Nov 2013, 6:45pm

Up Stream 507 kbps
Down Stream 1447 kbps
Attenuation Down Stream 50
Attenuation Up Stream 31
SNR Margin Down Stream 6.6
SNR Margin Up Stream 13.0

Same issues .. Distance to exchange is the excuse , 4mb line limited t 3mb and getting 2.5mb. SNR plays a big role ..around 6-8 depending ...also sometimes asking Telkom to change your profile to interleave as opposed to fastpath might help, however you will have longer pings. What is weird my 4mb line synced at full 4mb without issues until 1Aug 2015 ... Still the same distance from exchange ..so go figure.

Also try asking them to reset the ports on your line at the exchange

I'm in Mondeor, connected to the Robertsham exchange apparently. Got a 2mb line that was working fine until two weeks ago.

Upstream: 508
Downstream: 1274
SNR Margin Upstream: 197
SNR Margin Downstream: 179
Attenuation Upstream: 328
Attenuation Downstream: 515

Those db readings don't seem right ? Are you sure of the figures?

Yup, that's exactly how it is on my router (DSL-2750U with AF_1.72_R01 firmware). I'm not sure if I'm supposed to be converting it or something, but that's how it is.

I tested the line again with a different router, a Netgear DGN1000 with 1.1.00.50WW firmware, and it showed the proper output. It seems my Downstream is messed up:

Upstream: 511
Downstream: 1279
SNR Margin Upstream: 23.9 dB
SNR Margin Downstream: 6.4 dB
Attenuation Upstream: 23.9 dB
Attenuation Downstream: 48.8 dB

That downstream SNR is not great I suspect that's what's causing issues , ideally it needs to be over 12. I'm having similar issues .

Hi All

Anyone else experiencing a degrade in speeds in your line of late ? I'm told by my SP it's congestion at the exchange . 4mb line and speeds around 1mb .. Sux

*bump* :)

switched to an Asus adsl router a few months ago and saw a nice jump in my speed, connecting at 5meg and sometimes 5.5meg!

Was short lived, and now i'm back to a 4.5meg speed.

Anyone have any idea if/when we might get a VDSL upgrade? - i know Fibre is a longggg time away. Even though dark fibre already have fibre along main roads.

There is some VDSL in the area, however it stretches from the exchange on Rifle Range up to Xavier into Robertsham and a small portion of Crown Gardens.

fellow ridgeway residents. I'm sure you've seen the flood of pink in our area. Vumatel are trenching!

Anyone got any direct feedback from the higher ups?

I did email a Kieren Golden (apparently in charge of our area?) says my street will be trenched end of Jan (around the 29th) and our area in general will get lit up April/May.

Same dude told my neighbour he'll be lit up by end of Feb so a bit confused. Sooner is always better :)
