So today is one of those days when my line constantly drops and syncs at a lower speed, even when I know that it can hold at 3 Meg for more than 24 hours.

So far to combat this I have removed all unnecessary phones, leaving only one on the newest POTS Filter, yet it still chooses to act up.

Not to long ago the SNR is jumping all over the place, from 1 db to 21 db, and in that range I have seen -1.5 db :wtf:

Telkom, Telkom as usual can’t be bothered less, they’ll accredit it to the distance and try to lower the speed even more ( which for me is even further from 10 Meg  )

What to do, I am now at a complete loss.

PS: Currently the line is syncing at 928 kbps down and 512 k up.

I'd say it might be a problem on your DSLAM at your exchange. Not too long ago I also had the same problem where it would drop and then sync at a lower speed, drop again resync at a higher speed etc. I logged a fault and it turned out to be a problem on the exchange. If it doesn't occur frequently, then I'd put my money on a problem at the exchange.

Ask them to change you to another port on the DSLAM.
I'll be sure to phone them tomorrow, and attempt to ask them to move me to a different port.

Well it happens every couple of weeks and usually I'd just wait it out, but today it lasted quite long.

a drastic fluctuation of SNR would make me suspect a dry joint or flooded tunnel. noticing any noise on the phone?

Well, this is a good question, I haven't bothered to check the phone yet.

However on previous occurrences their wasn't any noise that I could hear.

I should say the the problem has passed - so I don't expect to hear any noise on the line should I check now.

Out of interest - The screen of the SNR (update interval is 1 sec)

After the second drop to -8.5 db (image 2) the line did drop, but not after the image 1 (-3.5 db) it kept on fluctuating and ended up on 21 db, then it fluctuated again to the lowest which was in image 2 then the line dropped.

Apologies in hijacking your post, but where do you get these stats, do you get it from your adsl modem? If so, what modem do you have?

Thanx

Currently I have a Netgear DG834GUv5 Modem (From Telkom), and to get those stats I simply need to go to
Maintenance > Router Status > then click on show statistics on the bottom of the page.

It does however vary from router to router.

Or if by any chance you have the same router, this might help: http://10.0.0.2/RST_statistics.htm

Thanx, I see my cheapy adsl modem dont give me that info.... Time to go shopping :-)
