ADSL killed my baby (Column)

speaking of good wireless, have a look at skywire. They are pretty decent. Offer a 99% uptime on the link. And its a voice network
 
Wow, it takes quite a leap of deduction to get from the heading to the article content. At least make some effort to link your heading to your article, please!

I suspect that the author suggested that, because of the best-effort nature of ADSL, an emergency call might not go through if the technology used is VoIP. Thus - because I use VoIP, and because ADSL is a best-effort service, I couldn't call the ambulance, and my baby suffocated.

Perhaps... the author was suggesting that the 'baby' represented a fledgling business?

While the content of the article may contain some correct facts, I do not understand why, if any of the dire effects forcast come to fruition, one cannot simply at that point move to a different option from VOIP.

Going VOIP does not in any way, shape, or form, remove any other communications option.

Silly doom and gloom article.
 
I agree that much work can be done in improving last mile access in the country, but we do have as customers, many telco's who do extremely well using ADSL last mile and get very good quality. That counts for wireless too. There are also technologies available to mitigate some of the problems of last mile.

GBR can offer all the necessary QoS needed for VoIP at all times, and I beleive Telkom is able to offer that.

Yeah, all I could think when I was reading it was "paid for infomercial".

We use these guys for our VoIP - http://www.switchtel.co.za - I never miss a chance to give them a shout-out - they're pretty much across the board cheaper than this chap from the article who's "passionate about affordable communications services", and it's run by a legend of the ZA ISP game, Greg Massel.
