A friend of mine had a meeting with his IT company and a guy from telkom yestersday. They told him telkom are going to put a 9gb cap on the line (not the account) and that they are busy trying to make the software to do so. Now this sounded a bit fishy to me. Any1 know anything about his?

I doubt it's on the line itself, because if it were, Telkom would effectively crush any ISP competition (even it's own devision)

Because that would mean, people who purchase more accounts to get, for instance, 15 gig a month, would only get 9 gig, no matter how many accounts they bought.

So, they would shoot themselves in the foot by doing this, and the SNO would be grinning all the way to the bank as the 50000 ADSL users switch to them.

I think they're probably talking about a 9 gig cap for local traffic, or perhaps *optimism* a 9 gig international cap.

Loosecannon was involved in the setup and implementation of the 3 gig cap, and the way he talks about it it seems very inflexible. So if they're writing new software, it's probably for that reason.

Putting a 9 gig cap on the line is like saying to the person, "listen, here's a phone line, you pay for every call on it, you pay monthly rental on it, but you can only make 10 phone calls"

lol @ rumours and speculations :-)

about a local cap, unthinkable and not practical. Telkom would have done this with ISDN or 56k long ago if they thought of going that low. I think telkom also have a limit of bad service ;-)

Heheheh ok, i thought so. This guy was so sure tho, cause someone at telkom told him. I just wanted to double check with you guys. Thanks for the input.

I might have added to previous post that we dont know if Telkom can drop any lower ;-)

9Gb is still far from acceptable, if you can get 140Gb on downloads (4Gb a day) that means you only get 7.5% of your line. Most people who browse dont even reach 1Gb a month, but if you download anything your 9Gb will be up in no time.

Is there a chance they are changeing the cap for that broadband TV thing?

Just speculating, but they could cap international at 3gig and disable the account once it reached 9gig. I hope they do not, it will be a huge setback for SA telecoms. We will have to arrange protest marches.

We already have a huge setback, but that would start riots.
