Hey guys. Need some help here.
My ADSL line has been dropping repeatedly for 3 weeks now.
At first, the DSL light would disappear and reappear a few hours later but now it seems like I've got to restart the router or it won't come back.
Also, from time to time all three lights (Wi-Fi, DSL and Internet) disappear or Internet just becomes red.
I logged a fault with telkom and a week later I just get an SMS that the problem was solved.
They gave me no indication of what exactly 'was solved'.

I re-logged a fault but I'm starting to think it may be my router as it's about 6 years old but would rather see what you guys think before buying one.

I take it you can't just get a different modem from your provider?

Sounds like it's the modem to me.

Literally just changed the modem. Managed to borrow one from a friend. Since installation, the DSL light went red twice. Both times, for a minute or two before coming right again without needing rebooting. This might have been because I was in the process of setting up the modem though so I'm going to test it for a night and see

I've already used a brand new filter he gave me with the modem and even changed all the phone cables just to be sure.
Could you explain more on a line reset and checking line stats for degradation, bit of a noob when it comes to internet

Depending on your isp, you could do a line reset through their web platform (like Afrihost), or you might have to call their call centre. It resets the port on Telkom side.

The line stats shown inside the router would give you some indication of the capability of your line and the speed it can do. Recent bad weather can affect dsl lines.

I've already phoned my isp twice and they've done port resets both times. Not sure if thats the same thing...?
As for the stats, are you referring to attenuation and snr as I've heard those are important but am not too sure how to comprehend them

Yeah, port reset.

Post a screenshot of the line stats.

After reading up a bit, I see that noise margin is apparently not the same as SNR. The value I had with 5.5db was Noise Margin. Is it still bad then?

Does it coincide with wind ? Had the same thing 5 years ago and it was a cracked line at my pole.

After changing the router, filter and all cables, the problem still remains. My attenuation is normal and after reading up on Noise Margin (which is diifferent from SNR) I can see that even that is normal.
What else could it possibly be?

Hey man, you should open a line fault as you should be able to run 10Mbps with that attentuation figure.

If your noise margin drops below 6dB the Telkom exchange will drop the line and restart the connection as it tries to use a different frequency band in order to gain a better connection. This is due to Telkom's new software.

Already opened a line fault about line being dropped repeatedly. This is the second time I'm opening a fault. The first time it was done by my isp. Thanks for explaining the photos btw. Much easier than I thought.

My noise margin is now 6.1. And my attenuation is 38.5. Is there no way I can increase my Noise Margin myself?
