Hi,
I would like to add a second telephone extension to my ADSL line but when I try it, the ADSL becomes unstable and the speed falls by about 75%.
As a non techie I'm presuming the second phone puts too much load on the line or something similar.
Is there a way around this problem?
Thanks,
Peter

You'll have one copper line coming into your house, with ADSL enabled on it. Not sure what situation your post is referring to, so here are some scenarios:

1) You can have as many physical phones on the line as you want, just make sure each has a POTS filter. No filter means your ADSL will drop / degrade when that phone is in use.
2) You can connect to as many ISP's at the same time on the same Modem as you want. Speed will be shared between all the connections.
3) You cannot have more than one ADSL Modem / Router on an ADSL line. Only one.

There are many factors that can affect it. Length of cable, quality of cable etc. But that will only be if the ADSL modem is on the extension and not the main incoming line.

Most important is ensuring each phone has a POTS filter. Though that would cause your ADSL line to lose sync, more than affecting speed.

Perhaps a diagram or more detail will provide more info that we can help.

Check the ADSL without a handset plugged into the extension.

I had a similar situation where the SNR was running at 6 or so. After disconnecting the handset the SNR jumped to 12.

Thanks. This is my situation. I only have one POTS filter so I'll get another one (Where?) and try again.
Peter :)
