Hey Guys
I would like to share my current online experience with you. Beginning of the month I had my 4mb line migrated from Telkom to MWeb. Seemed such a good idea at the time. One point of contact. Before I had full speed downloads after business hours and a respectable 200k+ during business hours.

After the migration was done my line speed dropped to between 50k/sec to 100k/sec during business hours, but as soon as the clock hits 6pm my line speed drops to a whopping 2.5k/sec to 20/sec. The result is that I can seldom open any website including MWeb's home page to check out line conditions and problems in general on their network. I cannot join steam, it just tiomes out, cannot play any online games, not even cod4 at times. MW2, steam based, a no go.

I logged a call with MWeb on the 13th October to inform them of my problem. See, at the time my Billion 7402G router would not stay connected. The tech support person informed me that there is nothing wrong with my line. On the 14th again I spent close to an hour talking to a tech support person who again said there is nothing wrong with the line. I was then referred to a senior tech support person who said that he can see my router disconnected 53 times in the past 3 hours.

Bingo! there is light at the end of the tunnel I thought... At last someone who can see there is a problem and who will fix it. Well, needless to say that the problem were not fixed. I was asked to change my login name from [email protected] to [email protected] ah line speeds were on the up and up and I thought that was the end of my problem. next day coming and we were back to square one. Maxing a whopping 20k/sec after business hours. I then got hold of a senior tech at telkom who then suggested we drop the line speed to 512k just to see how the line performs. At 512k the line was max at 52k/sec. Then we tried 1mb and we saw an increase to 80k/sec. He then suggested we test the line for a couple of days and see how things go.

Telkom's been to my house replaced the wallbox and two connector boxes outside my house. They then changed my adsl port in the exchange or so they claimed. They have connected two Telkom routers and none of them synced on my line. I then went and bought a new Belkin top of the range router. With the Belkin no disconnects happened but the line speed remained at 2.5k/s to a max of 20k/sec between 6pm and 12am. After that an increase to around 100k/sec. My line speed was upped to 4mb again and I saw the occational 150k/sec spike after 12am.

Today is day 18 of having this problem, Still no end in sight. MWeb dropped my line back to 1mb and will not move it back to 4mb again. I have subsequintly requested my line to be migrated back to Telkom. I have spent most of my talk 500 on phoning MWeb and Telkom almost every day. I had hours of utter frustration dealing with useless and incompetent support staff.

The line speed and ping tests you see in my signature is how I experience the internet. I could not get the two to actually complete on the same day. Would you pay R900pm + R249pm for this bull???

I am not in a good place atm. MWeb and Telkom broke my fricken internet :(

With my Telkom account I experienced the exact same problem, so it's not ISP related, but line related. No-one seems to be able to find the problem.

Hi Toppie

Please PM me your details. I will make sure this gets top priority tomorrow.

I was really surprised with the quick response from MWeb after I pm'ed my details. Thank you for escalating the issue MWeb Operations. Line speed after 6pm +-50k/sec and now varies between 20k/sec and 50k/sec.

Telkom tech came to my house today to investigate my problem. I told him the story, he then said that 2 weeks ago telkom tried to upgrade some exchanges in witbank to 10mb which was not successfull and crashed their system. They then rolled back to 4mb but some customers were left with very slow line speeds. Those cases got fixed as they were reported. Then he said because I am no longer a telkom customer I am not a priority for them. His words "telkom customers get priority and the rest gets whats left over to share" Now, I don't know how all of this is working, but I am feeling very done in by all of this. Seriously considering dumping adsl and gaming to go the 3G route...

That techie is speaking BS. He does not know who your ISP is nor is there any prioritisation to clear faults as it is purely on a first come, first serve basis.

Like I said, I don't know all of this works, but it's realy not worth the money anymore.

Been doing that for 3 weeks now... tired of asking, begging and fighting...

try hang in there, 3G may only cause more headaches at a greater expense. as for migration of the line, i do wonder what's in it for the ISP? some actually insist that if you want an account with them your line must be with them too, and sometimes even at a few rands cheaper. to offer that surely they must be getting something?

Hang in there Toppie, I've been fighting, begging, pleading with Telkom for almost two years to "fix it" and guess what.....nada.

You really do have a good chance with MWEB to get your problems solved; with Telkom alone you have none! This might have happened even if you didn't switch to mweb, so don't blame them just yet, just blame telkom.

All the best, hope you get it sorted.

Tested with mweb tonight. Asked them to move my line speed up to 4mb again, since I got 80k/sec - 105k/sec on the 1mb setting. The moment they set it on 4mb line speed dropped to between 2.5k/sec and 9k/sec. Asked them to lower to 1mb and the line runs at 80k/sec - 105k/sec... So, I'll hang onto the 1mb for now, at least I can do some downloads, mw2 gaming on the other hand .. no can do. I am hanging on, thank you for the moral support guys. Mr Jax, I saw your thread about your line problems, so I made peace.... I am not getting out of this spot quickly.

It seems to me like your line quality has degraded too much for your router to handle 4Mbps.
You could always try and ask Telkom to change the sync profile to 2Mbps.

Perhaps check if your router can give you ADSL statistics like line attenuation & SNR (noise) margins on its web interface. I've quickly scanned through the user manual, but I can't find anything like that on that router.

Hey Toppie, im having the same issue.

Whenever I play MW2 my latency is beyond crazy. Same goes for Dota on the local twilight server or even TS when i connect to the WAGE or a private server, My latency is 450+

However this is only on mweb, and its frustrating. Whenever i connect on my Afrihost / Telkom accounts i have no lag in any of my Local game servers or VOIP programs.

Mweb to Mweb seems to be fine in the games, but Mweb to anything else = Broken.
Perhaps try see if the problem presists on another ISP?

Welcome to myBB Rulic.

These issues that you're (Rulic) experiencing is due to Telkom/SAIX not peering with Mweb locally any more. Your latencies from Mweb to IS (Internet Solutions)/WA (Web Africa) should be fine on Mweb after hours.

I was considering moving over to MWEB, but now I don't know! I'm on SAOL at the moment. and suffice to say I ain't exactly a happy chappy! Before yesterday I used to get killer speed in my torrents - now I'm lucky to clock 10k!!!

Thats odd though, the WAGE teamspeak server = Web Africa Gaming Experience and the latency to it is 450+ on MWEB, same thing for the WAGE dota hosting.

Either way, I heard that MWEB is going to be hosting the new Black Ops servers and with local connection problems like this, a lot of people will be raging.
Im sure there are already posts around here somewhere about gamers having issues with latencies.

Belkin Modem Router, Line dropped by mweb on my request to 1mb.

Data Rate(Kbps) 1024 (Downstream)
Data Rate(Kbps) 512 (Upstream)

Noise Margin 38.5 (Downstream)
Noise Margin 12.0 (Upstream)

Output power 10.5 (Downstream)
Output power 1.0 (Upstream)

Attenuation 25.8 (Downstream)
Attenuation 12.0 (Upstream)

Na dude your line looks good you should hop back to 4mb. Im sure its the ISP.

My stats are way worse. I Have had telkom here so many times, i even obtained the region manager in midrands number.
Still as **** as it was upon installation. I have given up by now.

Check the Noise, this is when you will have issues.

Attenuation (dB) Down: 63.5
Attenuation (dB) Upstream: 31.5
