Hi all. Need some info on the line performance stats available on the modem( Telkom)

Are these stats calculated by the modem or are they obtained from the network side?

How often are these stats updated?
Reason: If I change a POTS filter etc how soon before I will detect a change in stats or will the change be an average over an extended period?

Trying to see what is causing my issues locally - if any.

Thanks.

-Modem calculates line stats
-Stat refresh is router dependent, others like netgear have a page that refreshes every 5 seconds

Best is to plug a telkom phone in and hear for any noise.

I'm going to hop onto OP's thread - hope he doesnt mind.

If I log onto my modem and click on the DSL Statistics link I see the below.
Please translate? Does this mean anything?

PS: Telkom 2Mbps ADSL with Afrihost Data.
PPS: Dont laugh at the 2Mbps - thats apparently all my line can handle... well maybe 4Mbps according to the Telkom agent but they weren't very hopeful. I'm very far from the Exchange they say.
I'm just wanting to see if there would be any change to my line after I am upgraded under Openserve's new free upgrade drive...

Although my line can theoretically handle 13Mb, my line seem to be capped at around 5-6 Mb. Does not even reach 7Mb. I've tried bypassing all filters completely, taking line straight into modem, stats remain the same with no real improvement in line speed

According to that your max is 3.5. Apparently the system reads your stats and pegs your line, so theoretically your max is 3.5 but currently maxed at 2 by your provider. So you might see some improvement in speed with the telkom doubling.

You should report the noise on your telephone line. That might fix and may result in better performance.

Thanx for the response.
What is "normal noise"

There should be no noise on your line. No crackling or scratching, just the speech and that should ideally be clear
So besides the noise db reading there should also be no physical noise. cool cool.
I wonder if Telkom would send someone out at this stage. Probably not. I guess.

I have NEVER seen someone with 63.5dB attenuation. NEVER. How are you even connected? Really bad hey there is zero hope for that line. The only thing good about that copper is if you sell it at a scrap yard for cash.

A severe line fault like copper cable exposed to moisture or the sun somewhere could also affect that stats. My advice is log a fault and see if they can get you a better line even though you might be getting fibre soon I can't imagine you can do anything latency sensitive on that line as it stands.

The best way to improve your ADSL will likely to find a good wisp, or get a good outdoor LTE antenna.

ADSL lines are not known for getting better over time.

As cavedog said, 63.5db is crazy high. back when I had ADSL, my attenuation got close to that every time it rained (in cape town), but they could not fix it, as all the lines flooded. I actually had to send a telnet command to my router to sync the line at even lower speed (by setting the noise margin to 12db from the default 6db Telkom gives) to keep packet loss below 2%.

Thanx for the advice guys.
I'll log a fault with Telkom. Hopefully they dont just storm in here and replace my landline with a useless FLLA jobbie :sneaky:

There is still hope for Telkom ADSL. My 10/1 line was disconnecting, getting speeds of 3-4 Mbps- pathetic service to be honest.

I logged a fault after exhausting all possibilities of the failure couldn't be on my side. Four technicians came - none could find the issue. All had the same story ie. the copper is kak, Telkom is not maintaining the copper, need to move to LTE etc.

Then the fifth technician came. I told him the problem is definitely outside my house. So goes to the nearest pole - which is rotten. He says he will request a new pole to be installed. 4 days later, Telkom sub contractors come install the pole.

Another 2 days later the same technician comes back, climbs up the pole. he then makes new connections on all the poles from my house (about 6 poles) to the blue and green box.

My line is back to around 9.4/0.75 speed.

GOD bless such people who actaully know what they are doing. Other technicians were actaully driving business away. The same business that feeds them

What the flip. And you never cloned him and sent him to all of us?? Shame on you
