Hi All,

we've got a 4mbps line from telkom at our office but our download / upload speeds are both just over 0.5mbps on a speedtest. Telkom has done work on the line before and everything checks out at our ISP's side, could it be the router setup?
I got this info from our router, a telkom 5102g :

Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin
:
18.0 12.0 db
Line Attenuation
:
55.0 31.0 db
Data Rate
:
1024 512 kbps

Not sure what it means but im guessing the data rate should be closer to 4096?
Any ideas where look for a solution?

@ TelkomZA,

after I pm'ed you, our internet went off for about 10 minutes and then returned at double speed, eg 2048.
Any reason why and will it go up further to 4096?
Thanks for your help so far!

Hi there,
From the stats you provided you were connecting only at 1024.
You should place a call with Telkom and get them to investigate.
Your attenuation looks high though and your SNR is not great. You can check this for ranges that are acceptable.
If there is any noise on the phone line start by placing a voice fault.
Have you also tried with the POTS removed to isolate them as a fault?

Regards

Tim

Hi Tim,

thanks for your reply.
I've been in contact with TelkomZA on this forum and they are busy sorting out our problem, stats so far are :
Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin
:
12.5 11.0 db
Line Attenuation
:
55.0 31.0 db
Data Rate
:
3072 640 kbps

What are POTS?
I've read through your link and will try moving the router further from the electrical plugs as well, at the moment they are right next to it

Thanks again for your help!

POTS = plain old telephone system - ie, your landline.
POTS filter, if they talk about it, is a thingy you plug in that splits the ADSL and voice component on the lines.
