Hi Guys!

I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight on my current ADSL crises:

I have a 2mb line, and have uncapped accounts with Openweb\Axxess and a 3gb account with Telkom. From around December 2012 I started having inconsistent speeds and my line would drop every now and then. Lately though, things have gotten worse, almost every day I would need to restart my router since the internet would stop working.

A perfect example was this morning: I had a Youtube video open, after the video was done I browsed a bit of Reddit, but all I got was Page Cannot Be Displayed. Now take note that I did nothing on my side, I did not reboot the router etc during this time. The connection just...stopped working.

Now my usual fix is just to reboot the device, but did not have any luck this time. I phoned Telkom and they did a Exchange port reset for me but still no luck. If I go into my router settings I can see that the line status is CONNECTED, the ADSL light on the router is solid, but the Activity light is DEAD.

After the Telkom Exchange port reset, I asked the lady if she is picking up any errors on my line, and she told me no, and that everything looks fine.

I'm sitting here at work now trying to figure out a solution, so far I have this:
1) The router is a Tenda W150D, I bought this device in December after the problems started, so I can rule out the router
2) I have one of those Wireless phones at home, I did unplug the power running to the base station before to check if that is the problem, but I'm thinking that I might try removing the completely
3) Bypass the pots filter and connect directly to the phone jack at the wall

Does anybody have any other suggestions\ideas what this could be?

(BTW, I have this "no connection" issue on all my ADSL accounts)

I had that last year, line would sync but PPPoE would not connect.

Later on Telkom found out the ATM link to the IMAX was offline.

Great, how did you get them to figure that out? Should I just phone them and ask them to check it?

Some routers have a fairly thorough diagnostic log while connecting that can give an idea what isn't working. I know it's sometimes the case that even though the tests go fine the PAD0 packets ( The PPPoE Active Discovery Offer ) can get lost and cause no connection issues on ADSL. They usually have to physically change ports at the Exchange to sort that

Thanks for the reply. I'm going to replace the Pots filter tonight and see if it makes a difference. If not, I will ask them to check out the above.

I did just get off the phone with Telkom, and they say my line has been set to 1.5mb the whole time - I will need to contact them again when I'm at home to set it back to 2mb.

My line has been doing the same for the past two weeks.

It is not synching at the highest rates and often stops working in the middle of browsing. Even resetting the router does nothing.

In what area are you based? Because it sounds like you are having the exact same issues I am.

Same problem past few 2 weeks.
Sync dropped from 34++ to 2+++
download speeds consistent with 64kbps diginet pipe (6-9 cps)

Above is consistent with Afrihost Uncapped/Afrihost Capped/Telkom Capped. So I deduce that the fault lies with Telkom.

At 13:00 today, my fault ref was 12xxCRK1802 (over 1200 faults reported by lunch time)

My PC tells me this:
bash ~ # lynx -dump http://checkip.dyndns.com/
Current IP Address: 105.236.109.254

And
bash ~ # ping -c 10 www.saix.net
PING www.saix.net (196.25.1.204) 56(84) bytes of data.
From wblv-ip-essr-1-atm-2-0-0-1.telkom-ipnet.co.za (196.43.11.22) icmp_seq=6 Packet filtered

--- www.saix.net ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 0 received, +1 errors, 100% packet loss, time 9000ms

Telkom said my line "tests fine".

They said that last year when my 4096 kbps sync rate dropped to +/-3500 after going totally disc. for a day.

PS.
From the way protocols are being filtered, I anticipate that soon, the TCP/IP suite will be reduced to HTTP, SMTP and IMAP2 and any other activity will be classed "Extra" and require a government license.

Also been having exactly the same problem the last two weeks. Sometimes my line was down completely, not syncing, other times it would sync but not connect. Occasionally it would connect, work very slow for an hour then go off again. After numerous call to Telkom, logging faults, getting references, having the fault logs closed etc they eventually did something and it started working again. IO got a full 2MB for a whole day, but now it had gone back to crawling again.... Exchange issues ...

Had the same issue on Sunday this weekend - turns out it was Telkom doing maintenance on the exchange.

Seems like we are having similar issues.

My 4096 line has been synching at that rate for over a year. But just within the past two weeks, it disconnects often, synchs at 2xxx, 1xxx and even at around 800.

Got back to normalcy last week for a day, and back to a terrible connection for the past few days.

I am in the Morningside area in Sandton.

Will log another call this evening and see what comes of it.

Hi There,
I suspect it is a Telkom exchange/distribution issue. I have seen a lot of activity in Randburg and Sandton in the last 2 weeks which may be contributing to your issue. You can ask Telkom to come on site and test with their router. I have found that to be effective in resolving the "line is fine" but nothing is going up or down it.

Regards

Tim

My line has been completely down since Monday morning.

Have logged calls daily with Telkom.

Apparently there is a "bulk fault" in the Morningside area with 65% of users being affected. Furthermore they do not know when the fault will be rectified as "the technicians are still working on it". Does anybody have any news on this? How can I force the issue such that I, at the very least, get decent feedback from Telkom?
