ADSL line syncs, but can't connect to ISP

I still have the same problem and have been unable to get it resolved (other than confirmation from Telkom that the exchange is congested nd they have requested an upgrade. Not sure if it's related). Meanwhile I'm connecting with an old netgear that authenticates fine - everything else won't authenticate.

Hi. Having the same experience. Using an old Netgear I can connect, although there are speed problems at times. Bought a new D-link 2500U and this also connects with the same speed issues at times. Thinking it was the modems I bought a new TP-Link. The TP-Link could not connect. ADSL line syncs but PPPOE does not connect. Now and then the PPPOE connects and according to the lights on my modem all should be working, but from the logs no internet connectivity and the connection disconnects after about 3 minutes. Again thinking it was the moem 'n returned it and got a more expensive TP-Link, but the same issues still.

Had a Telkom technician over, but no problems could be found. Had a second Telkom technician over today and again no problems found. His proposal was to get me a new ADSL port at the exchange, so hoping that it makes a difference.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but I'm experiencing the same problem, i.e. line syncs, but doesn't authenticate with ISP.

Telkom apparently did some infrastructure upgrades in my area just over a week ago in my area, and ever since then, I can't get on to the internet.

Thinking that the modem was stuffed, I bought a brand new ASUS DSL-AC68u, and it also wouldn't connect, i.e. it only syncs to the line. And I also made sure to upgrade the firmware of the ASUS before I set it up.

Can anyone here please tell me how Telkom resolved this?

Have you spoken to Telkom at all? Sometimes they'll upgrade the connection from the exchange to the rest of the network, so your line will sync with the exchange, but the connection further on isn't functioning.

Yep, I logged a fault last week. My line is with Afrihost, and they logged a fault with Telkom on my behalf.

Wanted to post an update.

My line was sorted out earlier this week. I had a Telkom tech come to my house with his own modem to test. It also exhibited the same behaviour. Prior to coming over, he said that there was indeed a fault at the exchange, and they diverted my port twice.

When he saw that his modem also wasn't connecting, he phoned their tech call centre and diverted my port 1 more time, which did the trick.

I have no idea why there are faulty ports at an exchange, but they sure sound fragile.

Special shout out to @AfriMan, @TelkomZA and @MickeyD for helping sort this out. 2 weeks without ADSL is not a pleasant experience.

I had exactly this problem recently. Telkom was convinced the fault was at my house, but the phone line was fine. The modem would sync, but not connect, also tested four more modems.

Only started working again when I shat all over them, and they recreated the port profile at the exchange.

But was down for almost 2 months before they started listening.

They had FU the profile when I asked them to change the line speed.

Nowadays the faults seem to be more related to Telkom incompetence than anything else.
