I'm a newbie, as you may have suspected.

I've ordered an ADSL line from Telkom over 2 weeks ago. Apparently the line has not been activated because there aren't any ports available, but customer service tells me that a port will be installed for me this Thursday. That aside, i bought a Sitecom "WL-582 Wireless Router 300N including USB Adapter" this weekend (I wanted a more commonly used router like Netgear or Billion, but this was the only one under R1000 available at Incredible Connections at Cresta.) Anyhow, i tried connecting the modem today. It was only upon reading the installation guide that i realized that i need an ADSL modem together with the router that i bought.

So now for my issue: Which ADSL modem do i buy? I'm looking for something cheap, as I already paid R800 for the router (slightly more than i budgeted)
Also, where in Johannesburg do i buy it from?

I understand that there are many topics similar to this one, and sincerely apologize for being a nuisance.

Can't you take it back? And why did you buy from incredible corruption in the first place?

U can get a d-link single port modem for max R300

Never, never purchase from Incredible Corruption or HiFi Corporation, you will either be paying double for what the product is worth or it will not exceed a lifespan of three months....

*The line has been activated today.

I already tore open all the packaging of the router, but i'll try and return it this weekend.

If i do manage to get a refund, then which model modem including router should i get? (preferably something around R700) Also, is there perhaps a physical store i can get it from as opposed to buying it online?

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I've seen posts that are negative towards the D-Link modem/routers, but I've had a basic DSL-2500U which cost me R315 almost a year ago, and so far, not a moments trouble (the single-port one referred to above). Even this one can handle Bridge mode settings (which means being able to setup multiple ISP accounts).
I got mine from an independent computer retailer - as an alternative, if you can't find where they're sold where you are, then I think Matrix Computers sell an equivalent Billion (don't know model no.) for about same price - no need to spend more unless you'll be running more than 1Meg speeds, as far as I know.

i'll probably get shot for mentioning them, but i think even the telkom direct store is a lesser evil than incredible corruption. first check at a local matrix though

Hi, I asked at telkom a little while ago - think they wanted 999. You can try Zaps at the Brightwater Commons - that's where I got mine

I've returned the router and have decided to buy a modem/router online. I've browsed through pricecheck.co.za and am interested in the Netgear DG834 (http://www.nivo.co.za/buy~netgear.dg834.adsl2.modem.router~p5685?) Would it be a good idea to buy this? Or are there better alternatives? Note that i intend to connect with 2 devices - my PC and PS3.

Hi kingoftomorrow

there are also 2 billion routers that you could also look at. the first being the 5200G RC, which is a wireless 4 port adsl router and also the 7300G RA also a wireless 4 port router and there is also the 7300 RA which is a 4 port adsl router without the wireless. All these routers can be bought online from the online store www.webantics.co.za
