ADSL Modem+Router on iBurst/MyWireless

Against my better judgement, I've signed up for ADSL, in the hopes that things will get better with time.

However, in case they don't I don't want my hardware to bind me to DSL. However, i also don't want a million boxes cluttering up my study, so I'm opting for a Billion 7202G ADSL Modem/Wireless router combo.

Here comes the daft question: Say I move to Sentech/iBurst/Whatever else may pop up...does the 'external' network of the router *HAVE* to be on the WAN port (in this case an RJ11? telephone jack) or can I plug another broadband modem into any of the ethernet ports?

You can use the ADSL router as a normal ethernet switch. I've used it to make the router point to a desktop PC with dial-up modem as the default gateway, and was able to surf wirelessly with this setup (during times when ADSL wasn't available).

I've never used iBurst/Sentech so I don't know if it would work plugging an iBurst modem directly into the switch (you need to be able to define the user account details somehow). Worst case scenario, you could plug the iBurst into a desktop PC, plug the PC into the switch and define that PC as the default gateway on the ADSL router. Hope that answers your question.

You can plug the other devices into the Ethernet ports on the router (Iburst...), problem with this is you will not be able to take advantage of all the functionality on the Router, i.e. VPN, VOIP, Firewall as you would need a WAN port to do this. The router will act as a switch, an expensive one.

Your best solution would be to purchase a cheap 1 port Ethernet ADSL modem, connect it to a WAN router that offers all the functionality.
