Hi,

Looking to purchase a new wireless ADSL modem/router that can be flashed with DD-WRT. Ideally I would like it to have an USB port to attach a hard drive. (I want to split local and international on it and use it as a media centre for the PS3)

I can't seem to find what I'm looking for so I might just settle for a Linksys WRT54GL.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

The WRT54GL is a fantastic router, although it is only a router, and not an ADSL modem as well...

The GL version is much better than the GS.

No idea of any modems that will offer you all that your looking for though, so good luck with that....

i did a quick google and as far as i could find out, dd-wrt is a no go with router+modem combos. which suck ass cos im looking for the same thing

chop, I've asked on the DD-WRT forum a couple of months ago whether they have firmware for ADSL modems... and they said NO and they won't be attempting to write firmware for ADSL modems either.

Here's my thread where I've asked for a all-in-one solution for doing routing/traffic splitting with PPTP VPN's, ADSL connectivity, Wireless N and USB for NAS devices: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...-WiFi-1Gbps-LAN-PPTP-VPN-clients-with-routing
Nowadays I prefer a MikroTik RB750 above the Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware, since they are easier to setup and its cheaper. The downsides are: they don't have proper OpenVPN support or wireless.

You can get a cheap mecer 4 port router to use with the linksys, the the will function as the modem, linksys as the router which also has wireless. Only thing is that you won't have a usb port for the hard drive.

@Ben Dover. I nearly made a big mistake there (I thought it had an ADSL modem). Thanks.

The Linksys is about R600 so it's pretty cheap, will probably stick with it. Although I would like a modem with usb drive support. Any cheap ones that are supported by dd-wrt?

Also, what would then be a good modem to go with this? It would need do have a bridging mode do dial two accounts.

(Thanks for the help guys)

There were asus routers that supported dd-wrt and had a usb port but I don't think its available anymore.

You can buy the Linksys @ around R600 + a Mecer 4 Port ADSL router at around R300, the mecer supports brige mode so it will work with the linksys.

It is the asus WL-520gU, I have one running dd-wrt and it works well but as you said I don't think you can buy one anymore. You would also need a separate ADSL modem.

Yes it was the WL-520gU, now you only get the WL-520g (non usb model) AFAIK.

chop, could you perhaps say why you want a router with DD-WRT firmware on it? If you simply want to do traffic splitting, then you don't need to use Gatecrasher's DD-WRT script! Here's a thread where dawbomb has started to write generic scripts for other routers for splitting traffic: http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthr...nd-international-traffic-now-on-Telkom-Router

The reason I wanted DD-WRT firmware is that I was hoping that I could implement some kind of bandwith monitoring system, even if it was just emailing totals on a daily basis. (There are two kids that share my connection and I want to kick them off once they have used a certain amount.) I'm currently using SquidProxy to manage the bandwith but then I need to have my machine on most of the time.

I'm currently using a MikroTik RB750 (R325 ex VAT - http://www.scoopdistribution.co.za/product_info.php?products_id=863), which comes with a User Management package (that you might have to download off MikroTik's site). The user manager allow you to specify rate (kbps up & down) & transfer limits (total downloaded, uploaded or combined total). You can use the Usermanager in combination with the Hotspot package, DHCP server or VPN services (eg. PPPoE / PPTP).
You can configure it to transparently redirect HTTP traffic via your Squid Proxy, or simply run the MikroTik web proxy.
Like I said before, the drawbacks are that it doesn't have Wireless.

There is a TP-Link WR1043ND ( http://www.dbg.co.za/product_info.php?products_id=382 ) that comes with USB for NAS devices, but I'm not sure if you can do account management on it though. Its not an ADSL modem either, but its fairly cheap (R599ex VAT).
Alternatively you could simply get a dedicated NAS device :)

I would go for a WRT54GL and get a dlink 2500u they are like R200 and work very will with it. You can mount a samba share on a local pc over it if you want to share content.

I think I'm going to get the Linksys....

I just realised something. Instead of managing the bandwith, it's probably easier to get multiple ADSL accounts and assign 1 of those accounts to the a range of ip addresses.

Would it be possible to do this on any of these routers?

Yes, even the D-Link DSL2500U can dial multiple PPPoE accounts and only allow certain IP addresses to use certain accounts/network interfaces. To do that, you'll most likely (if not definitely) have to use 'iptables' (Linux command-line firewall). I'm pretty sure someone here could help you out with that if you don't know how to use it.
The only concern that I have with using IP address based accounting is that the users can simply force their IP address/MAC address (if they know how to of course) and then get access to your Internet accounts.

I would rather let the users dial their own accounts. That way they can force their IP addresses/MAC addresses but they won't be able to gain access to your Internet account ... if you have set up your router in full bridge mode (thus letting your router dial no accounts).
The downside to letting each user have its own ADSL account is that it could be a waste of cap and its cheaper to buy cap in bulk.

If you want users to dial their own accounts then get a Router/Modem with PPPOE passthrough support, one of which is the LINKSYS WAG54G2, to name one of many...
In this way, each user will be dialing their own connections.

Although, this is not the ideal solution.

wireless adsl modem + DD-WRT request

Hello!

I've been reading this thread and was wondering if perhaps there is a new product on the market now that is wireless adsl modem + DD-WRT compatible?

I want to set up a VPN over my house for wireless, virsus protection etc, and upgrade to one single unit.

Any news product anyone has heard of?

Cheers!

Welcome to the forums.

You should ask this question on the DD-WRT forums rather. My guess is that the DD-WRT kind of firmware would never be altered to work on any kind of ADSL modem.

You're still welcome to buy like a cheap ADSL modem (eg. D-Link DSL-2500U for under R200) and link it with a broadband router that supports DD-WRT firmware (eg. TP-Link WR1043ND for like R600).
