ADSL modem

It supports PPPoE pass-through as far as I can tell, but don't know if it supports bridging of WAN packets (which essentially means the modem could be authing a PPPoE session and computers on the network could still auth their own sessions via it if they wanted).

It does have multiple VC support, though - up to 8, I believe.

Thanks. I'd probably need to query with Uniterm Direct exactly what it can do.

Thanks - will keep following this thread.

Modem arrived yesterday, performs as expected out of the box.
It does appear to have a bridge mode for every VC, though I realised yesterday I no longer have any other accounts than our lone uncapped account, so I can't test it to make sure of whether or not it functions as expected.
What I can say is that you can set up another VC to allow for 1438 Bridge Mode LLC, which I believe acts in the same capacity as half-bridge?

Apologies for re-opening an oldish thread, but it is still kinda relevant (to me, anyway).

Like some other folks (I gather), I prefer to have separate devices for my DSL connection (modem), for routing (dual-WAN router) and for wireless access (WAP). So I too was/am always on the lookout for "plain vanilla" xDSL modems.

It seems as if Telkom have blown another of my modems. I am not sure whether to curse or thank them though because secretly I am glad to be rid of the crappy D-Link DSL-2500u that I bought 6 months ago.
I've actually had the D-Link DSL-2500U for about 4 years now, and it's been rock-solid in daily use. However I would be the first to admit that its UI is klunky and certain of the more advanced features are sadly lacking. Personally, I would sum it up by saying that it's a very reliable "plain vanilla" modem, IF you don't want to do anything "fancy" with it. Start to tinker with multiple ISP accounts, port-forwarding and the like, and you'll quickly bump your head against its shortcomings.

I personally believe that many of the problems people experience with the DSL-2500U are caused by having re-flashed it with the wrong firmware version. Early on, I made that mistake too, by flashing my device (hardware version D4, factory firmware version RU_1.53) "up" to firmware version 1.0.47, thereby turning it into a complete dog. Fortunately I was able to recover by flashing back to an older version. There are multiple device versions, and multiple firmware versions on D-Link's Russian site (this is where the "RU" comes from), and it really isn't that clear which version(s) apply to which hardware.

[ For the record : if you have the DSL-2500U with hardware version D4, the latest appropriate firmware to use is RU_1.58, which you can find and download here. The keywords to find the Right Stuff for the version D4 hardware are DSL-2500U_BRU_D. My (very) sincere thanks to user Aessa for helping me sort that one out in this equally old post/thread. ]

Anyway, all of that is not why I'm here! :p

Lately I've had the need to tinker with more complicated port-forwarding on the DSL part of my internet connection and the old DSL-2500U isn't cutting it for me any more.

I need a replacement, however, so does anyone here have a suggestion?

I found a possibility; a TP-Link http://www.tp-link.dk/products/details/?model=TD-8616 but I am worried that I will regret this purchase as much as the D-Link.

Why is there such a dearth of ADSL modems?

I've also been looking at TP-Link's "plain vanilla" modems and came across the following :

TD-8840T : ADSL/2/2+, 4 x RJ-45 LAN ports
TD-8616 : ADSL/2/2+, 1 x RJ-45 LAN port, 6kV surge-rating on RJ-11 port
TD-8816 : ADSL/2/2+, 1 x RJ-45 LAN port, 6kV surge-rating on RJ-11 port, IPv6
TD-8817 : ADSL/2/2+, 1 x RJ-45 LAN port, 6kV surge-rating on RJ-11 port, IPv6, USB port

Anyone else know of (other) significant differences between these models ?

GPSJane, I gather you're definitely not sorry to be rid of DSL-2500U :p
Which TP-Link do you have now (TD-8840T ?) and how has it been for you ?

Any other feedback from other "plain vanilla" DSL modem users appreciated, especially if it relates to how easy/difficult/functional the TP-Links' port-forwarding arrangements are.

Thanks in advance ...
