Not sure how to put this. I read a few times that guys complained that their ADSL accounts got/was hacked, I just realised by backing up (saving) the modem cofiguration on the PC, which is a .cfg file, you basically give access to all the information required for a hacker to hack your modem and or provider account. Everything is saved in a text file (.cfg) UNENCRYPTED!

Thus search for *.cfg on pc and make sure none are modem backups.
Drag and drop the .cfg file in notepad and then freak out at the available information.

I just cleared mine and placed it on stick.

Be warned!

Nobody is going to get your account details by hacking into your computer and looking for a .cfg file...

Accounts are hacked in a much simpler way: accessing your modem via your internet IP. But, most modern routers don't allow access over WAN anymore, so the process is getting trickier.

It's getting trickier, but you can still quite easily get around 20 usernames and passwords
by just searching IP's around your ip. (Netscan) Search for open port 80, then try your hand at default passwords.

Some routers make use of binary files, so that automatically squashes any theory about searching a user's computer for .cfg files. Also, if this were true, this file would have to be inside a shared folder.... and how many people actually share their whole computers as is?

Sure, If they can hack major corporations, etc do you think or believe your PC are so safe? LOL.

/starts free tinfoil hat handouts.

yes sure, there are hundres of hackers just trying 24.7 to hack home users...

problem
a) need access to pc first with cfg file on it.
b) some are not just plain text (ex linksys am200 save as bin), will need a reader.
