So after having 3G for almost 5 years - I've decided to go back to ADSL as I'm moving into a new complex in 2 weeks.

The complex is about 9 years old and the previous owner never even had a phone, let alone ADSL. However, the place is empty now and I've just come back and noticed it does have a wired point in the lounge. How do I start getting ADSL now? :/

Find out the number fromthe body corporate in when I move?
Will Telkom be able to assist in the meantime with the address?

Also looking at that MWEB 1mbps uncapped (shaped) at R599.00 excl voice line rental. How slow is the unprioritised traffic - like Vuze, P2P? I'm hoping to get around 80kb/sec on a 1mbps line under normal sitations - but I'm hoping Vuze won't crawling at 10kb/sec :(

order a voice line from telkom online then order from mweb when it is installed, they will give you a number

and use utorrent, its pwns Vuze

If you're in Cape Town region, then the speeds will be good on Mweb. I quite a few friends who are on Mweb, ranging from 384kbps - 4Mbps accounts and they're all very happy with the speeds, but none of them really use torrents.

Astraweb works wonderfully at like 420kB/s almost 24/7.

Thanks guys!

I'm based in JHB ... and I think (and hope) the speed to be enough!

Careful. Body corporates are always a hassle with ADSL. First make sure that wired point in the lounge is actually physically connected to the Telkom network.

Went to a Telkom shop ... they need my green ID (not licenses) to apply for a new lines (R450-00 odd). Even though the point is there, they need a techy to come out and plug it into the exchange.

Can't do it online either (wtf?) ... and only other option is phone.

The backlog is also 1 month to get the voice (no ADSL!) line up and running ...

can't you apply for both voice and data at the same time?
i did, but they stuffed it up completely.
remember, patience and a landline are prerequisites for dealing with telkom.
i can hear the waiting music in my head already...

LOL

I'm trying to avoid anything too complex for them :/

So once the voice part is up and working correctly, I'll head off to Mweb or something (or is Telkom ADSL quite good?)

Best you make sure there's room in the exchange for you - it'd hardly be worthwhile to go through all the hassle of getting the voice line connected, only to be told that there's no available infrastructure...

Im in the same boat bro, my line is existing and its still going to take a month before the guy can come and do his thing! Serioulsy, in this day and age a month to wait on services like these is pathetic, especially at the goddamned prices telkom charges for these 'services'...
