Hey all!

This is a great forum for information on all broadband related issues.

My question is the following:

What is the most reliable and cheapest uncapped adsl/wireless service?
The prices that I've looked at is insane (around R2500 p/m wireless). I really don't like the idea of an adsl line cause of Telkoms rental policy.

I would really appreciate any help that you guys can offer!

thanks

There are loads of wireless companies that offer uncapped services for much less than what you quoted there. If you could help by telling which area you live in I could suggest a few. Usual prices are around R500-R600 p/m for 128kb uncapped and then price increases for greater speeds.

thanks for your help Ekhaatvensters.
Live in the PTA area (central). Do you think 128kb is worth it? Maby 512kb
thanks agian

I'm down in Capetown.. dont really know much about the wireless ISP's in Pretoria. But they all have pretty bad ping's, or atleast not as good as ADSL. But they uncapped service usually makes up for it. Try uninet.co.za (not shure if they in PTA) and go to hellkom.co.za and check on the side to see all the available WISPs.

The uncapped adsl solutions from IS also arent that bad but then the latency is almost as bad as wireless technology. check out www.openweb.co.za, think they resell uncapped IS.

Do yourself a favour!

If you want to save time and money then get DSL, its much better than wireless! The pings are lower, its more stable and the contention ratios are much lower.

If DSL is available, go that route, save yourself time and plenty of frustration!

That is true, it hit me after a while of being on Iburst, but the prices for SAIX uncapped accounts almost make wireless viable. A 256kb wireless uncapped solution will cost about R800 while a 384 uncapped account will cost up to R1800 or so including the line rental.

but they can offer it that cheap because their service is slow and always working

so you dont use as much bandwidth as with adsl

dont let the price fool you do not go wireless
only if you cannot get dsl

Wireless Sucks!

You can get uncapped dsl192 for about R800 per month! Really wireless is not worth all the setup costs and the amount of money spent on the phone moaning about poor qos.

They just resell bandwidth over and over and really don't care

you are always far better of with DSL if its available

True true, but that R800 deal doesnt include line rental of R270 so the cost is over a grand, and that is on IS which shares many of the problems wireless has, ie. crappy internation speeds, bad latency etc. It also blocks all p2p so the point of being uncapped is?

And the wireless offerings arent all slow, in fact uninet have very good speeds and very little downtime, unlike MyWireless if that is what you are thinking of.

But DSL is better... must admit, just the data prices in SA make it viable to think of wireless.

The uncapped wireless services that are being mentioned are not IBurst or MyWireless as neither of these services offers an uncapped product. Some of the satellite options are uncapped but they are really so expensive and/or slow as to make this an option that should only be looked at as a last resort. Just be aware that there are a few companies out there offering a wireless (wifi) service which is ILLEGAL. I have heard of people paying money for equipment and then after 3 months, the company is shut down and their customers end up with a whole bunch of expensive junk on their roofs.

The cellular products are too expensive when using large amounts of data. They are the way to go if you are a road warrior going ALL over the place. So really it comes down to a question of ADSL, MyWireless or IBurst. ADSL is definately going to come out tops as far as OVERALL most reliable in terms of speed and stability. HOWEVER, it really depends where you are. If you read on the forums, you will see how ADSL has been really up and down the last few weeks particularly in Gauteng. And as for wireless, both products mentioned work very well IF your coverage is good and they are set up correctly. They are still not as reliable as ADSL. But this has to be countered with the fact that:
* ADSL will take 4 to 10 weeks to get installed (if it is available at all in your area) as Telkom has to come put in the line.
* On ADSL, problems are less common but when they do happen they tend to take longer to be resolved.
* The wireless services can be set up in a matter of a few hours. Initial costs (depending on whether you go on a month to month or 24 month contract) can be higher (up to around R3500) but the monthly fees are definately very competitive with ADSL.
* ADSL cannot be moved - no taking it to your girlfriend's house for the night so you can send a few emails.

I have been on wireless for about 2 years now. I have had a few times where the service was unavailable but it has never been so bad that I decided to can it and put in ADSL. But then again we have some customers who have and with good reason. But we have had a few customers on ADSL and they have moved to wireless for various reasons including portability and a dislike of Telkom! I don't feel it is as cut and dried as some of the forumites make it out to be. All the internet services we have in SA right now are at times unreliable, way more expensive than a similar service in Europe and backed up with service that sometimes leaves a lot to be desired.
What I would suggest is to visit http://www.telkom.co.za/portal/page?_pageid=1724,148067&_dad=portal&_schema=PORTAL to check if your exchange is ADSL enabled. This is step 1 and if it says it is not, then this immediately cuts down on your choices. (Please note that if it says your exchange IS enabled, it actually does not NECESSARILY mean that it is open season on getting your line - there are more issues to overcome first!(-:)

Then if you wish to check out the wireless services, I would recommend getting someone to come out (preferably with both MyWireless and IBurst) to check on your signal and give a demonstration of the service. You will then at least make an informed decision.

thanks guys for all your input and advice. I will look into all your suggestions!

ADSL versus Wireless

I'm trying to do some cost and service comparisons and would welcome comments and input. It seems to me that a Telkom ADSL512 business service, 2GB shaped is about the cheapest option at close to R800 per month. Wireless connectivity is available at a very similar price. Assuming a user who is mainly interested in data transfer between branches by VPN, a bit of VOIP, email access and limited internet browsing, which would be the better service? Are there any issues with VOIP or VPN's on a shaped DSL connection?
