Hi all,

I have battled for a week to setup a Smoothwall Firewall with my ADSL connection.

I have

ADSL---PLANET router---Red NIC---Smoothwall---Green NIC---HUB---PC's

Planet router to HUB works 100% BUT NADA thru Smoothwall.

Can someone please help with the IP , Gateway etc settings for each NIC and router?
I use 192.168.0.x range

Is my only route to use PPoE or is there a way to have this setup without PPoE?

I would prefer not using PPP settings and have direct access to router as in a "ALWAYS CONNECTED" setup

I searched for a Newbie FAQ or "Do it like so" , nada

Thanks in advance

it is not so straight forward once all is up and running on the network (start there that all pc's can ping each other and router look at setting up the link ... (if you dont use pppoe smothwall is potentialy a waste) set up the router remember to set the VCI/VPI to 8/35 and put in uname/pw make sure link comes up then try access the net ...

if this works move to a more exotic setup with smothwall/pppoe

Hi,

When doing a default Smoothwall installation , using Green + Red setup , and default IP 192.168.0.1 for Smoothwall , I can Ping Smoothwall on (192.168.0.1) BUT cannot Ping the router.

Can the router IP be anything above 192.168.0.1

And whichones the Gateway?

A

the gateway will be the device with the best knowlage of the outside world and the closest hop to it [the one with the user name on]

the router and firewall can have any IP as long as they unique

Hey all,

Thanks for the suggestions.

I sorted my prob out and thought that I would let u know.

The BIGGEST prob was that I had not realised that the RED + GREEN NIC's cannot have the same SUB-NET. ( I wish I noted that )

SO I set Router to IP 192.168.1.1 - 255.255.255.0
DHCP enabled to feed the RED NIC
valid DNS and Gateway to AUTOMATIC

Green NIC set to 192.168.0.1 - 255.255.255.0
DHCP to feed LAN
Gateway 192.168.1.1
same DNS

All work 100%

yeah that would cause you some headaches alright if you want them to have the same subnet (it is possible) enable proxy_arp on each nic (sysctl) but this will make the FW less effective ...

glad its up and going some feedback on the install setup will be gr8 if you have some time
