Hi everyone

The last 2 nights we have had storms in Durban. I am on a 4Mb line, I have 2 ISP's.

The last 2 nights my ADSL has been dropping, and trying to sync at diff speeds. Understandable considering the weather.

However this morning its syncing at 2Mb, so I phone telkom and the lovely lady agreed to reset my port. Fine. Still syncs at 2Mb. Before it was around 3.2Mb or 4Mb.

Now I try play Blackops on a Capetown server, with both ISP's, I get a 200 ping, VERY steady at 200. On JHB I get 69 ping. (before this it was CT - 40, JHB - 80). Now I decided to join a london server, and my ping is 240, which I would say is what it should be.

So my question is, how is it that I get a 200 ping from cape town because of a storm here, and a 240 ping in London.

Its 2 separate ISPs though.

Can anyone help?

Replace your filter ... probably partly blown. I'm in Durban and survived the storm of the 22nd. One of my filter blew ... was working, but line was unstable. Changed it with a spare and back to normal.

hey man,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have unplugged all phones, all filters and just left the ADSL in there. Same problem.

My line speed is constant, but my ping is stupid.

A technician came around for a line for another building on my property, he said there are alot of ADSL issues so I must log the fault.

Hopefully they sort it out

Thanks again though

Which ISP accounts are you using? Please don't tell me you're using Telkom / Web Africa...
For Black Ops, I'd recommend that you either use IS or Mweb.

Also, what ADSL modem are you using?
Could you please post your line attenuation, SNR margins & sync speeds here too...

I am using cybersmart. I did a traceroute and they routing me through london back to capetown :/ this was as of last night.

Its raining, which for some reason seems to affect my line speed, last night was horrific, my actual speed was 480kbps from speedtest.net.

Noise Margin
13 dB 10 dB

Attenuation
52 dB 46 dB

line sync now is 2224 or something like that :/ last night it was 19**

I usually get around 42 attenuation for the far end indicator, but other one is pretty stable at 52. My noise is usually around 7 on far end.

with good weather I sync at 4096 and I get an actual speed of around 3.6 - 3.2 Mbps

Does rain kill 4mb's this easily?

The ping problem is at least ISP related, but my line speed and constant disconnects during rain or wind is telkom right?

The line attenuation is not supposed to change at all, so it seems to me like the problem is with Telkom, because the weather shouldn't affect your ADSL connectivity.
At 52dB line attenuation, you will have issues to sync at 4Mbps, unless you have an awesome ADSL modem. So far it seems like the Siemens Gigaset 762SX, Marconi and D-Link modems perform quite well under poor conditions.
At 42dB line attenuation, you shouldn't have any issues to sync at 4Mbps.

It's usually the best if you can get a Telkom technician to have a look (do his diagnostics) on your ADSL line in poor weather conditions, because in perfect weather conditions he simply won't pick up on the faults.
I've always used Telkom's website to report the faults and I've had great success so far.

As a temporary solution you can probably just ask Telkom to switch your ADSL profile to 2Mbps, or even 1Mbps if you prefer stability over bandwidth - which is definitely my preference.

thanks alot Pada, I really appreciate it :D will use their online facility now :D
