Has anyone in the helderberg area / cape town area been experiencing problems these last few days ? If my connection isn't dropping constantly, my transfers stop completely for a few minutes. During the time that I don't have any transfers I can't even access dns servers, the lines is completely dead.

Yes, I am experiencing the same problems. The line only stays connected for a couple of minutes then disconnects for a while before reconnecting. I am in the Helderberg area.

I phoned Telkom but they found no problem with the line and said it to be a ISP issue. Problem is that I know of 2 other people that is experiencing the exact same problem and both of them have different ISPs. This is not a ISP issue but some problem with Telkom but they are too stupid to realise it. Question is how do we get it fixed, since its been like this for 3 days?

The last time I had a similiar problem with ping times in online games and to sites (it fluctuated by as much as 700ms while I was idling) Telkom claimed it was my PC for about a month and half until I finally spoke to someone at SAIX who later informed me that the area didn't have enough bandwidth and some or other processor somewhere in the area had supposedly also fried... I'll try to find the guys number , I know I had it saved somewhere on my harddrive.

*edit* Oh btw, this cannot be an ISP problem like you also mentioned, I've tested it on 2 different accounts : TelkomSA and an IS account

We need Telkom to understand that this is not a ISP issue or a problem with our lines. Its got something to do with their network. Problem is we need to get past the monkeys at the help desk. All they do is test lines and if thats not the problem they automatically say contact your ISP.

I can't even stay connected on IRC.

My modem's now directly connected to my PC, and I don't get disconnects. It's more like there's a huge bottleneck somewhere. Every now and then a little bit of data trickles through, but when it gets too much there's a stoppage.

I've phoned Telkom about it, but apparently if they send someone to check it out and there's "nothing wrong", you'll be charged a R400 unecessary call-out fee...so I told them I'll wait and see if it gets better. Nothing yet.

Southern Suburbs. CT.

This morning at 7am when I arose, the Router's PPoe lights were off.
I reset the router several times to no avail.

I did however notice that at about 8.30am when I went outside there were 3 Telkoms Vans at the local exchange.
When I returned a bit later the Router's lights were all glowing and the internet was working again.

A fault at the exchange?

Yeah the R400 call out fee is an annoyance , we all know that they just accuse

a) your isp
b) your pc

then they come to your house and confirm that your line is 100% fine and then tell you all the telkom BS after which you give up and hope that someone else gets something done.

A friend of mine in somerset west had the following to say earlier tonight :

[21:30:38] [@Phaserblade] About the Helderberg ADSL problems ... we got 2 call's from Telkom ... one from the technical department (to apologise) and one from quality control.
[21:30:52] [@Phaserblade] Apparently it's been sorted

after that i got disconnected from IRC (again) yet Telkom has //apparently// sorted the fault, wonderful how business users don't get told it's the isp or their hardware is at fault /endRant

Same here. Haha what can you expect.... its Telkom. They just reinforce our status as a Banna Republic, every single day.

It seems to have been sorted out.

Been connected close to an hour with no hassles so far.
