Hi

Long post but please bear with me.

I have recently received and setup a 384 adsl line with my isp Cybersmart and been having a big problem.

I installed the modem last Monday the 5th and the line and internet worked great I was getting my 30-38 kb/s and managed to watch 10 odd videos from video jug with no problems had no connection problems.

Then on Tuesday the 6th everything started going wrong my line started dropping every 8-10 minutes. I phoned my isp they reset something and told me to check that the modem is set to never timeout, which I did and did not help. Then they logged a faulty line with telkom.

I had a dropping line the whole week except Thursday night after around 7pm but a fluctuating download speed between of 5kbs – 39kbs and did not stay stable at all.

The telkom technician came on Friday morning he told me the exchange is fine and installed a new cable outside my house. He tried two of his modems and said everything is fine.

But I still had problems and a dropping line. I tired the macer modem, I tried a fresh install of xp pro, I tired two OS’s. and No firewall.

I also tried a second netgear modem,
With the netgear modem the log file is not showing a dropping line, but when I try steam a video it will steam for awhile and at some point it will stop buffering which shows me a dropped line. Also im only getting a 14-18kbs download speed at most times.

And today noticed its now taking my modems 3-4 try’s to connect.

Any advice?
Also does anyone know of a free software app I can use to monitor my line? To show if the line drops and the speed? The reason I need such an app is my netgear modem does not seem to be good at logging files.

Thanks

How do i convince them to check their side, they keep telling me everything is fine and must be the line.

Any software you can think of i can use to monitor my connection and get stats?

You really should get an account with axxess or someone even if it's just a 1GB that you use simply to test things on your side when there's a problem, presuming you don't have a locked router or otherwise can't change accounts.

That way whenever your ISP claims the problem is on your side you can try to log in with the other account to see if things work and if they do then go back to them and tell them to shove their theory of the problem being on your side and to really look into it.

Being able to say that everything on my side works with another ISP account and that they obviously have to sort out something on their side has saved me alot of time arguing with an ISP or stubborn support desk.

Most good ISPs run a guest account that can be used for testing purposes.
I would use the Netgear modem ahead of the Mecer (anyday). These all come with a splitter which separates your data and voice. Use the Netgear filter. I find it better than the Telkom POTS filters. Remember that in a surge (or strike) the filter is often the first to go. Try get another splitter/filter for comparison. The older Netgear splitters come with their own telco wire to connect the Outer Pair (UK Standard) to the Inner Pair (SA Standard).

Thanks to every one for the replies i appreciate it. ;)

Im busy trying a Vox Telecon account a company account at my house to see if i can get any more clues in whats happening.

It gets irritating, at the moment everything seems fine with the macer modem no drops or anything, this is the third time out of 9 days that its working with no drops. Which tells me something is changing ether at telkom or cybersmart.

Does anyone know of a good free app that i can install to monitor the connection more accurately?
