I'm having a constant problem with the ADSL at my folks' place. I have an IS ADSL account.

For the most part browsing is a-ok. When I attempt to download a file (mostly anything above 250K) then the transfer will ALWAYS (every day) time out. On my Mac the browser gives me a "Connection reset by peer" error. On the Windows Desktop Firefox just states that the download fails.

This can't be blamed on IS satelite connectivity as this happens every single day. Telkom said according to them there is nothing wrong with the line (they did not send a technician out) and it is probably IS or my router.

So, is it worth getting a new router and trusting Telkom's call on this or should I rather force them to get a technician out here.

Well the cheaper option will be to get a 1GB Saix account from Web Africa - and do that test first.
See how it goes - maybe you just have some IS problems - you wont be the only one.

I'll first try the ISP, then the router.

The Mac isn't the problem as this happens with every device I connect to the router.

Similar problem on my side and did the following test. It didnt resolve anything but at least shows where the problem lies.
When connecting using ADSL IE will NOT open asp or aspx pages and downloads stop after 200kb (IE or Mozilla) and FDM (Free Download Manager) battles on large files. I fire up the trusty MODEM and open the pages and do the downloads at slow speed. Definately the ISP side. Cant say router config or ISP.
