Hi, need some help figuring out whats wrong with my friend's dsl line.
I'm thinking it might just be his line's quality is horrible, but he wants a second opinion =P

He has a 4mbit line, but can only sustain syncing at around 1024kbps.

Right, so here's the problem. Whenever there's more than 2 PPPoe connections on the line, all traffic just seems to stop. The router is still synced, the attenuation and noise margin stays the same, the connections are still connected, but no traffic is flowing through. The only way to rectify this problem is to reset the router. Also, this does not necessarily happen right after having more than 2 PPPoe connections, sometimes it runs fine with up to 5 connections for an hour and only starts giving problems then.

The problem is also not limited to having more than 2 PPPoe connections, traffic only seems to die much quicker. We tried using the router as a gateway, seemed fine for a while, but the same problem always crops up. Reset the router though, resync and reconnect and everything is fine for a while though. Sometimes it doesn't happen for a week, sometimes it happens every 10 minutes.

Weather is not a factor in the problem, as it does not happen more when it's raining, wind is blowing or it's hot. We've tried my router on his line and we could barely get any traffic even with only one PPPoe connection.

He has a Netgear DG384GT router. Here's the stats:

Connection Speed 1344 kbps downstream 384 kbps upstream
Line Attenuation 61.0 db downstream 31.5 db upstream
Noise Margin 5.6 db downstream 13.0 db upstream

As I keep telling him, he should call Telkom and asked to be synced at a lower speed.

ANY other explanation for this problem though?

Sounds like a line filter.
If he has a inline filter for a telephone, replace, bypass or dump it.

Nope, no filter on the line. They have a seperate line for the dsl.

Seperate line, they have one line for ISDN and had another one put in for dsl.

Put a phone on that ADSL line - it might be noisy

Those line stats are bad...

Looking at the Line Attenuation, its a amazing that the ADSL even syncs at over a meg... Its either a lot of noise on the line, or you are to far from the excahange to sync at 1024.
