My buddie lives in a complex and telkom say he cannot get adsl but his neighbor who lives next door has a telephone line.

So tell me this, if telkom can put a telkom line in your house can they give you adsl?

They can only install ADSL if the Exchange supports it. There are many towns that have phones lines but no ADSL available in the area.

If your friend has his neighbor's phone number, you can enter it on the telkom website to see if the exchange supports adsl.

mh348 beat me to it

and yes also agree that the exchange needs to support it

I was wondering the same thing when we moved. We used to live in a town-house complex but eventually moved to an apartment complex about a street away that never had a line installed. I went to Telkom end of June to apply for a landline, they installed it and then I applied for DSL. The Telkom site said that while my exchange supports DSL, my infrastructure doesn't. I haven't the foggiest what that means, but 3 days later I had my 4mbps DSL installed :)

Only thing now is that it seems my line runs at about 2,500kbps instead of 4,096. I'm still trying to figure out if it's the copper which is crap or if I'm too far away from the exchange. My bet is that it's the copper since I'm aware the exchange is pretty nearby. At least it's better than nothing :)
