ADSL / Route Sentry / Cellphone / Wifi

Yes, that is a pretty broad title but it pretty much covers the query I have.

My current setup involves me connecting to my 384k Telkom ADSL line using my wired SMC router. I then use Route Sentry on my laptop to dial up two of three ISP connections depending on the time of the month and cap available etc. There is also a second PC connected to the SMC router on which I also have a "dial up connection" but do not make use of RouteSenty, I just dial the correct ISP at the required times.

Now I have a wireless Billion router sitting gathering dust as it is Nashua network locked and does not give me the freedom I desire and want! At a fellow forumites suggestion I have, for a while, been wanting to try and get my setup so that I can use the Billion as a wireless access point to transmit the ADSL from my SMC through it and overcome the problem with it being locked but still have wifi! I tried it once but had no luck and a few issues with email arose... so I gave up.

I now want to try again as I am wanting to connect to my wifi with my N82 cellphone to get some cheap browsing going! I thought about giving the whole thing a bash again (any assistance or additions to the posted threads are welcome!:)) but then something occurred to me. If I do not have my ISP settings in my router but use RouteSentry or PPPoE to dial it, then how will I connect to these on my cellphone? I assume I would "dial up" on my cellphone too? I also have an issue with the first step where it seems because I have set up PPPoE and am using RouteSentry I have difficulty accessing the SMC router via my browser with the default IP address. This was overcome the first time but using the other PC but as stated this now also uses PPPoE connections.





I am now getting to the point where I reckon perhaps I should just pay someone to come and set it all up for me properly too..... anyone know anyone good/cheap/reasonable/trust worthy in the Durban area who can come and sort out all these settings and wiring for me?? My problem is when I ma trying to set it up I then lose the internet as a resource to help as I am using my router to change settings etc ... a catch 22! :)

ive gotten my n95 connected through wifi using a pppoe dial up session

however, you need to active internet connection sharing on the particular account for the phone to pick it up and you can only have one account dialed in at any time (as soon as i dial the other connection the phones internet stops working)

you dont dial up through your phone but rather set the phone to use your pc as the dns and gateway and have ur pc dial out

im not sure how its gonna work when ur trying to use a seperate wifi access point though
 
Too lazy to read the other threads.....

So have you done the following:

1. ADSL line connects to SMC
2. Plug an ethernet cable from the SMC to the Billion
3. SMC IP ex: 192.168.1.254 and Billion: 192.168.1.253
4. On the Billion go to CONFIGURATION --> LAN --> DHCP SERVER and then select DHCP SERVER RELAY option.
5. Enter the IP from the SMC router.

You should be able to ping the SMC wirelessly when connected to the Billion.

Have 2 active DHCP servers on a single LAN segment is still going to be problematic. Rather just turn off the Billion's DHCP server altogether. DHCP requests from wireless devices will be bridged by the Billion to the SMC, and it will still service them.

That is why it is DHCP RELAY. If the Billion has it enabled, it gets the IP's from the SMC and then just distribute it that way. It is not 2 DHCP servers then but one.... Normally use that function when I set-up WDS.

If the Billion does not get an IP from the SMC then it will not distribute IP's....
 
Damn, you see this is exactly why I thought it better to just throw money at someone to do this for me!! ha ha

I'm sure technical guys just throw around acronyms just to confuse mere mortals! :)

Well technically, there will still be 2 distinct DHCP servers, the fact that one slaves off the other for configuration makes no difference. When a PC on the LAN or wireless broadcasts for a new lease, both the Billion (via the SMC) and SMC will see the request and respond, with the PC using the one that arrives 1st. I'm not saying it won't work, just its not optimal and will make troubleshooting more difficult.

The real purpose of a DHCP relay agent is to service DHCP requests on a segment/ipnet without a DHCP server, where these request are forwarded (relayed) to a DHCP server on a different segment/ip net (through a router which would not normally forward DHCP requests).

Actually just though of why it probably wont work. One thing a DHCP relay agent is supposed to do is alter the default gateway issued by the real DHCP sever to itself. So if the Billion responds 1st it will be the PCs default gateway, but its WAN port is disconnected/unconfigured ... result no connectivity.

So LancelotSA I suggest, go into the Billion web interface an disable the DHCP server (& alter LAN IP if its the same as SMC). This will relegate the Billion to being a straight wireless to Ethernet bridge, so you can now connect one of its LAN ports to one on the SMC and all wireless devices will have same connectivty as wired.

EDIT: BTW this will not solve your RouteSentry problems, the wireless devices can only use the ADSL account setup on the SMC.
