Hi all

My dad's offices may (finally) go for an always-on internet connection. What would they need to get set up on ADSL? They have (or will have) 4-5 PCs set up on 100Mbps ethernet with an 8-port switch.

Obviously they'll need the ADSL line set up from Telkom.

What about a router? Any recommendations? It should definitely include LAN ports, DHCP, a firewall, etc. What would they need to ask Telkom for if they wanted to use PPPoE? Does D-Link have a suitable model.

Any catches in setting the ADSL modem up?

Sorry, I'm somewhat clueless on ADSL.

Thanks

I am using a Netgear DG384 4 port router/modem at home.

It runs on Linux and has a builtin firewall (NAT and iptables naturally) and does DHCP and has a PPPoE client as well.

DLink is not bad and makes a similiar product with same features but the Netgear has been faultless so far and it's web admin tool is straight forward.

All you need to get running from Telkom is the login name and password and their DNS IP addresses and configure the ADSL values to LLC based and VPI to 8 and the VCI to 35.

Better explain all those to me, Tibs. What about the ADSL modem? Or do I get that separately?

claymore - i got a linksys wag54g. they cost about R1000, and if you dont like fiddling setting thingss up, it has a wizard that can do it all for you. it is also a wireless hub.
whatever you do, DONT buy the Telkom Marconi router - its useless!

The DG834 is a combination of a router and an ADSL modem in one box ... the PPPoE client runs on the router which does the on demand connect with a user configurable idle timeout period.

The LLC, VPI and VCI settings are simply ADSL configuration settings for Telkom's ADSL connection ... that is entered into the router via the webadmin interface and only done once.

Ah, OK! So a router that offers a built-in modem would be good then?

Something like:

D-link DSL-504G External ADSL Router 4-Port UTP 10/100, IP Routing

Plus ADSL Surge Protector too, I guess?

(Prefer the D-Link because I get them dealer price).
