Hi

I am getting ADSL (atlast), and need help getting a modem/router.

The connection will be shared by 2 PC's. The one is about 25 Meters away from the other one.

The cheapest option I think, would be a ethernet cable, although I would've liked wireless.

I want to know what be the best/cheapest router, and what would I pay for a 25m cable. I see Prophecy has 20m CAT5e for R45.

The router I have in mind:

But I think I need:

Do I need filters? (I have 2 telephones)

Please help me, this is all new to me:confused:

For a technical reason I cannot view those prophecy links at this moment.

I would recommend this if you don't plan going wireless and need a solid brand at a good price:

  • D-link DSL-2540U ADSL modem + router + 4port 10/100 switch ; ADSL2/2+ 24Mbps downstream / 1Mbps upstream , with firewall + security protection

However for about R200 extra you can get this one and have wireless should you need it some time.

  • D-link DSL-2640U ADSL modem + wireless router + 4port 10/100 switch , 802.11b/g ; ADSL2/2+ : 24Mbps downstream / 1Mbps upstream ; G.lite : 1.5Mbps downstream / 512Kbps upstream

Yes, you will need two filters.

:)

What about the D2500u, but it only has one port switch?
Hey elL0L, yes, the 2500U only has a single Ethernet port. Quite a good piece of equipment. The 2500U would be the best option if you already have a switch. All D-Link modems come with one filter included in the box, which is nice :)

Sorry im dumb, but what is a switch? A router?

I already have a Ethernet hub.

Hows the Billion 5210s for R440 at Take2? One ethernet port and one usb port.

And what must I expect to pay for an CAT5e cable. Techmall quoted me for R175 for 30m, but prophecy have 20m for R45?

Seem like I'll also need a new ADSL router in the near future. Lately my router don't want to switch on when it was off, no lights, nothing. I then must switch it off and on at the plug and eventually it will come on.

What I was wondering, is there any ADSL routers out there that can send faxes in the same way the old 56k modems did. My old US-Robotic modem is still lying around for the odd fax I need to send from time to time. Haven't seen any mention of fax sending routers so I gather there are none. I think it would be a nice feature to have and I see no reason why an ADSL router can't be made to send and receive faxes.
