ADSL Router Opinions

Hi Guys,

I will be getting an ADSL line this week. I wanna get a router for about R500 but wouldn't mind spending a bit more so that I don't buy too cheap. What should I be looking out for when purchasing a router?

The D-Link wifi one is about R860.

Non-wifi R500.

i think i wanna go wifi capable. otherwise i cant work anywhere else except where the router is in the house. right?

correct. otherwise you have to run ethernet cables to where you like to work throughout the house.

Where can i get the dlink at R860? Should I be concerned with speeds of these routers from 125Mbps to 300Mbps?

Get a SMC - SMC7904WBRA-N router. It is a N-Draft wifi router, so it's range and speed is much better than normal b/g routers. Sahara sells them, if you have an account, or know someone who has a account. The cost is below a R1000-00. I sell a lot of them, never had any problems.

N is still in draft and until it is fully ratified, every manufacturer has their own take on it, which results in incompatibilitiy issues. IMO it's not worth going the N route until then.

a stupid question-cant I connect the ethernet cable from the phone terminal point to my laptop without having a router in between. some routers have internal modems and some dont.

dont laptops have internal modems or is it just a network card or must i check the system hardware to see what it has?

Latops have anolog modems installed. Won't work for ADSL.
