Concerning the 4-port ethernet router, I was told that if you plug two pc's into the router then the connection is split equally to both pc's.
First of all is this true?

If so, then let's say I were to plug two pc's into the router, is there any way that I can change the setting so that it doesn't split the connection, and rather whichever pc is needing more bandwidth, will get it?

See cos both pc's will always be switched on, so the router will always detect two pc's plugged into it. Cos I know that if the one was switched off, then the other pc will get the full bandwidth.

I'd really rather do it this way, than have to daisy chain the router to an 8port switch and then have both pc's connected to the switch.

If anybody could answer that for me please, cos I'm not too clued up on the hardware side of things.

Thanks :)

While the bandwidth is potentially equally split between the 2 PC's ( or however many PC's on the router / network ), if one PC is using the internet and the other is not, then all Bandwidth is available to the 1 PC using the internet.
However should the 2nd PC access the internet , bandwidth will then be split between the PC's.

if you plug two pc's into the router then the connection is split equally to both pc's.

The above statement is false. The bandwidth is split between the two PCs, but not equally. If one PC is running bandwidth intensive apps, it will try and get 100% of the available bandwidth.

Like Franna said, it depend on the bandwidth priority of the apps running.

eg: say bitcomet runs in high priority: so if ur getting torrents on one pc, the other will hav a hard time picking up the scraps

but if ur browsing on boths pc's or doing things with similar priority... it will be split equally within reason

Me think someone posted about a utility that does Internet bandwidth sharing between multiple PC's a while ago!
