Hey guys

I know this has been asked before, but new products are constantly being released and whatnot, so I thought I'd try my luck. I'm looking to get a new router for myself. Up till now I've been using a Netgear DG834N which has served me well, but I'm re-purposing it now and looking to get a new one.

It obviously needs to support ADSL2+, be configurable and provide all the necessary stats/info regarding connection / line / attenuation, have built in firewall etc, etc.

I thought of just getting the newest Netgear model, but I've seen a lot of negative sentiment towards Netgear on the forums recently, so I was wondering what the general consensus was on the best brand, and which models in particular?

Thanks in advance!

If its within your price-range, I can highly recommend the Linksys WAG160N or bigger models.

Really Really REALLY awesome devices.

Its only downfall is that their wireless antennae are internal and not superman-powerful.
The WAG120N is also very nice if you're looking for a smaller price, but the big-boy model has USB ports and all those sweet little extras that make it possibly worth the price.

Suppose it would be useful to specify I'm looking in the R1k to R1.8k range

Just noticed that myself, thanks for pointing it out. The Linksys WAG320N sounds quite impressive on paper - any recommendations from other brands? Are 3COM no longer one of the better choices?

I happened across some overseas forums talking about newish modems, anyone had any experience with the Billion 7800N?

EDIT: Wow - just saw the price on this thing - nevermind.

Yeesh, can't find that WAG320N anywhere but PCMall, and I'd rather go out and buy it this weekend. (Cape Town)

You guys have any other locations to source it from, or any other recommendations on modems?

There's a TP-Link W8960N 300Mbps Wireless N ADSL2+ Router that you can consider too. It doesn't have Gigabit Ethernet or USB, like the Cisco one, but it's a lot cheaper @ R600 ex VAT from Uniterm Direct.

I'm not sure why you want to go for all-in-one ADSL routers like these!?
You can get ADSL routers with WiFi AP's built in for a lot cheaper, but you will pay extra for Wireless N, Gigabit Ethernet, USB and VoIP.
Cisco is most likely the best you can get, but then again you pay for the difference!

Well, my requirements are not quite so high end, but I do want a good quality router. All these features are "nice to have", but not essential. What I actually NEED is an ADSL router, with Wifi (preferably N), built in Firewall, supports ADSL2+, is configurable enough and advanced enough to be able to view line/signal information etc, and preferably has Gigabit Ethernet. USB, VoIP, these media streaming abilities, etc, would've been a bonus but aren't what I set out to look for.

That TP-Link sounds decent, but I've never even heard of the brand before, so I'd be a little hesitant. Thank you for the help though!

Well, my friend is using a TP-Link ADSL router and its quite decent (has WiFi, Signal statistics, half-bridge capability), except that it doesn't have SNMP (which very few home users use).

I have the WAG320N and I've had no issues with it at all. Running Wireless-N with a little D-Link USB adapter and get 85% signal through 2 walls and a ceiling. It also has ADSL2. The line stats are a little tricky to get to, but google solves that no problem. All in all a nice router :). I can't remember how much I paid for it, think it was around R1400 - R1600. Would definitely recommend it :)
