Hi All,

I have just signed up with cybersmart and have received my router.

I successfully verified the account on www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl 24 hours ago, but I am yet to get a connection. (Using 3g at the moment for those wondering)

The cybersmart call centre seems to think there is a line problem, but for my own peace of mind I need to check this as I did do the rather stupid thing of setting the router to factory defaults. (Ya ya, really dumb considering I have no idea what I'm doing.)

I have tried a few things but can't seem to get it right. Can anybody tell me what the crucial settings would be for PPP, NAT, DHCP and all those other lovely acronyms IT poeple seem to love? Surely there must be a standard for DSL in SA?

The router is a Mecer 4 port, although the router config screen says Connexant.

Please help before I pull my hair out..... whats left of it.

Hi Kevin

you need to log into your router, by default DHCP should be enabled, if using windows
click star the run
in the run box type CMD then click ok
in the dos box you must type ipconfig then press enter, you will see a bunch of ip addresses, you are looking for the one that says default gateway, that is the ip of the router once you have that number close the dos box.

click run once again in the run box type http:// followed by the router ip then press enter
it should then open a web page asking for a username and password enter those then click login.

once logged in look for a quickstart link or something like that, you should see a box where you can enter your cybersmart details, don't forget to save the settings.

then reboot the router and all should be ok.

apart from that the rest of the settings(defaults) should be fine.

Hi,

Tried all that, like 100 times.

The router is definitely establishing a connection, but it seems PPPoE is not working for some reason.....

In the main page of the router config, it shows the ip address of PPPoE as 0.0.0.0 and states "link is down".

Arg. How do you tell if it is a telkom problem or a router problem?

...don't forget to save the settings...

If you are using Firefox as your browser you need to allow Scripts for your router or it will not save your settings.

Don't forget to change the router password. Don't leave it at the factory default.

Hi again,

Making settings changes on the router is working 100%, my issue is "Are my settings correct or is my line dead and how the hell do I tell the difference?"

The settings you want are:
Encapsulation: PPPoE
Multiplex: LLC Based
VPI: 8
VCI:35
MTU: 1492

Those are some of the most common settings that you will need to make sure are correct. As for whether the line is down check your ADSL/LINK/SYNC light if its flashing or red(depending on the router) your line is not synchronising(sp?) with the exchange.
