Hi Guys,

I need your advice on a few things. I have tried ordering DSL online but the telkom account number field is too short for my number  I guess I must set aside a good hour and try do it telephonically.

I have 2 PCs and one laptop. What I want to do is get a wireless adsl modem router. Is it worth getting a wired one these days as they arent much cheaper than the wireless. Wireless just seems much more convenient. What I want to do is have 2 accounts where both pcs can dial up to both, doesn't necessarily have to be at the same time. I want the laptop to be able to dial up to one account wherever it may be in my house wirelessly. So in effect I must get an account that supports atleast 2 concurrent sessions. I guess I must also setup a PPPoe on each pc so each one can be connected at its own discretion. With regard to the Router, which one would you recommend? I would prefer a ADSL router with a built in modem, but is it better to get them separately? From what i've seen it is not in terms of cost. So which wireless router is stable, reliable and not excessively expensive. I really do not wanna pay more than R1000. Would I need any special features on the router in order to do what I want to do? I.E. Do I need a bridge mode enabled router?

Thanks guys, your help would be really appreciated.:D

I also went the online ordering route. Trust me, do it over the phone (just make sure you are the account holder or you have him/her close by). After not hearing from Telkom after 2 days from ordering over the phone I gave them a call and they have no record of me applying online. I subsequently ordered ADSL over the phone (took less than 15 minutes) and I was able to do the self install the NEXT day here in Bloemfontein.

For the rest of your question I'm unfortunately not the correct person to ask.

Thanks Goobie. What details do they require from the account holder? With Telkom being the proud owner of one of the most expensive DSL services in the WORLD, you would think they would have adequate facilities to order online and have more staff in their call centre. Oh well, there goes my lunch hour.

As long as your modem/router has bridge mode then ur setup will work

Get a wireless router that supports dual bridge mode and then you can configure the router to be connected, or simply initiate a dial-up connection from any PC, or both (Dual-Bridge mode = Both at the same time).
When you have a WI-FI enabled device like an xbawx or ipaq or laptop, you'll be berry glad that you have the WI-FI capabilities.

Thanks for the replies guys. Which router do you recommend and from where? I want to buy one ASAP. Yea, wireless seems to be really convenient. I really do not want to start threading cables through my roof.

I have no idea what info they require. My wife is the account holder and they subsequently kept me on hold while they called her up to get permission to proceed with the application.

RE: Cat5 wires through the ceiling. Give that a second thought! In my experience, wifi is only good for surfing the web...if there is too much interference (ie, in my case the microwave oven) and your speed drops drastically.

dude do yourself a favour when ordering adsl

make sure telkom know its for business use and you have just started your business from home even if you have not

they give preference to business

secondly why go wireless unless your going to use a laptop around the whole house

if not rather use adsl wired as the speed will be alot better
