ADSL Router setup

ok i have set up a VPN software on a Telkom Marconi router. it also took me a while to figure out that the PAT is in fact Virtual Server. I have successfully configured my VPN using OPENSOURCE VPN (http://openvpn.net). Also the marconi router has a built in firewall. if the firewall is enabled you have to allow the port to be opened on the VPN. if you want to know how i set up the VPN let me know

By the way the IP address that you have to put in the Virtual Server config is the acutal IP of the machine u configuring for the VPN as in the server.

does anyone here know if the marconi router supports bandwith prioritising?

I, too, am battling with vpn connection via a Telkom (Marconi) ADSL 4-port ethernet.

And it doesn't save the entry anyway.

I have this prob too

Ok, and if that doesn't work...?

This router is exactly the same as the marconi router, try it out

Yeah, been through this.

VPN server sees a client "authorising" for as long as it takes to time out and decide whoever was there has gone away. Meanwhile the client gives up (shorter timeout) and reports the remote computer didn't respond.

Looks like the traffic is only in one direction and responses are being blocked or dropped somewhere. Poss the router firewall but who knows what other ports to open? Or is my router, like moe's, *broken* ?

Terminal Services

Hi, newbie please be gentle

can I ask, clock, why on this earth you want to open an unsecured standard port giving god knows who almost un-fettered access to your entire network??

surely there is/are better way(s) to do this

1) firewall port change - so incoming 1234 goes to 3389, less obvious to a hacker

2) VPN - secure traffic then ALL ports are open, but only to approved connections

I appreciate what you are trying to do, and MicroSnot love giving us these things but opening a standard port, of which there are many many documented attacks is surely asking for an increase in overtime budget !

Believe me, choosing an alternative, even as simple as mapping a different user definable port at firewall level to 3389 is preferable, as any hacker hitting this port won't know what it is and is likely to leave it alone or run the wrongs checks at it

Better still is dedicated firewall / VPN accelerator so all incoming connections are barred ( unless you open SMTP etc ) to all but approved connections

Been there done that, just trying to share my own exoeriences

What am I doing right / wrong

Hi guys

Please help me here.
384K ADSL - Webafrica 30g account (Telkom "abuser" LOL)

I play guildwars alot, but always struggle to get it to connect, so I fiddle around with the network settings and stuff and suddenly it will connect and I'll get map downloads of 30-40K / s ... then I can play the whole night without problems....until the next night....same problem.

I need to know if my setup is right...
I have a switch - "Local area connection 1"
I have an mecer ADSL modem which creates a "local area connection 3" - speed 10mbs
Then I have the webafrica connection...which also say 10mb/s
I left any ip settings to sort itself out and my connection will work fine, but today not even msn messenger will connect, I've tried everything...so what will the correct settings be.

Web africa gave me the following :
DNS/Nameservers: Autoassigned or 196.25.255.34 (Primary) / 196.25.255.3 (Secondary)
If I want to add the dns servers where do I add it... on the webafrica 10mb/s connection or the "local area connection 3", everything at the moment works fine(all pc's on my home network can access the net) except messenger and guildwars...which I think is shaping issue. But just to make sure...tell me how it should be set up.

Thanks alot

Got Marconi Router

Hi Guys,

I've got a marconi 4 port router, unfortuantely with adsl in SA we have dynamically updated ip's i'm using a piece of software called no-ip, this just links a dns name to my updated ip, my question firstly is will this works for vpn and how would i go about setting this up from a router and server point of view for the guys outside of SA.

I'm talking standard setup, we'll look at changing the ports at a later stage.sorry one more thing we've got a piece of software that uses two ports 34200 and 34202 for both up and down communication.

How would we go about this?
