Finally going to order my own ADSL! :) WhooHoo!!!

But I'm gonna need the router. What do you guys suggest? Haven't been looking long so I've only seen the Billion 5102s and the Dlink DSL-504T.

Comments?

Linksys WAG54G, had one for more than a year now and they rock. I'm using port forwading and VPN function to route traffic to work for after hours standby and it works very well. The replacement is the WAG354G.

I got a cheap ass Billion 1 port ethernet for R450. Can't go wrong, bang for your buck!

Anything apart from the Telkom crap is fine!

Also have a look at the NetGear products you can buy from most computer shops.

I would go Netgear, they are just easier to use. This would be a better choice though Dlink DSL-504T.

All the various ADSL modem models seem fine these days. I would suggest buying whatever you can get easily, for the price you are willing to pay and which has the features you need.

I have used

1 Billion
2 Netgear
3 Linksys
4 Telkom cr@p

The top three above are all good. Stay away from number #4 though.

My problem is that I'm clueless when it comes to ADSL modems/routers. All I really know is that I'll need a router cause I want to connect more then one pc. Is wireless really that good? My pc will be about 15m, in a straight line with about four walls in between, from the modem. Main use will be for games will wireless screw me around?

Also can someone explain this built-in firewall thing. Will I need to install software or something to make it work, or is it plug and play?

Most routers are plug and play. You will need to change some settings, post here what you have and someone will help - if you buy a Linksys, I can assist.
The firewall is automatic. Wireless is nice - does not cost much more. An an example, I bought a PDA, and now it can connect to the internet using the router. Had I not bought a wireless router, I would not be able to.

You really need not be worried about setting up the router - a Telkom techie could do it....

As an example, plug in router, open browser, go to 192.168.1.1 enter router logon (default admin/admin), change VPI to 8, VCI to 35, select LLC, select PPPoE, enter username and password of ADSL account. Plug in phone line. Set network card to DHCP, and done.

OK, I can do that....... don't know what it means...... but I could do that.

Wireless should make it easier to connect my pc up since I'm so far the modem but is it stable tho?

Four walls could be bad news for wireless. Only an actual test will tell, obviously. But I recommend using wired for anything that stands still. It is just faster and more stable. Sounds like you need some kind of four port ADSL modem/router. Having wireless as well depends on if you want to spend the extra money and think you will use it.

(Also just want to say I did not mean to include Telkom modems in "All the various ADSL modem models".)

netgear

i have a netgear 4 port for 650 still sealed with warranty.

In case anyone was wondering. Here's my final choice: D-Link Wireless 108G Gaming Router

It might be a bit overkill I know. I decided to go with wireless since I'll be getting a new laptop from work which will be wi-fi enabled. It also has a gigabit ethernet which won't help me at all from a internet connection point of view but if my friends drop by it'll be a nice to have.

PS: Forgot to mention but I still need to have a normal ADSL modem/router since the D-Link doesn't connect to the ADSL line by itself. So I'll get myself the bang-for-buck Billion.

Sorry to bring up this thread again but I just wanted to ask what you guys would recommend as being the easiest router to configure port forwarding with?

Ive got a Telkom piece of cr@p stupid loser router. Ive tried absolutely everything I can to get port forwarding to work on it and after having it now for almost a year, ive proved that it actually cant port forward. (if anyone is interested Ill find the link to send/post which will show you why this particular telkom modem simply does not support port forwarding.

So anyway, Im missing being able to use dc++, dcc on mirc etc, because I need port forwarding for that. So im tired of all this missioning to get it to work. What would you recommend I get which is as simple as possible yet still reasonably cheap. (Id like to be able to port forward, to be able to set it up reasonably easily, and to set it up as a dial up modem if and when necessary.

Oh, and not wireless please.

Im thinking this sounds good: http://www.digitalplanet.co.za/shop/product.asp?StockID=62034

Thanks, cheers
