All my life I have only installed routers at customers premises. Lately I installed a D-Link 300T modem at a customer. Odd thing that I have noticed is that, If you take the modem out of bridge mode (let the modem dial up for you), your pc has to be on DHCP and the modem setup with a DHCP server.

Another odd thing if there are 2 pc's on the network they constantly get ip conflicts while in dhcp mode ....

Is there anyway around it? With a router all you have to do is set the gateways, why does the gateway not work with a modem?

Hehe... I had exactly the same problem. Here's how mine works.

I have the DSL-300T modem and DI-604 Router. You have to set the Router to have DHCP enabled and the modem's must be disabled. That's all. No gateway setup, no nothing.

Good luck!

Usually you configure DHCP, NAT etc on the router. Although the builtin features are nice for a typical home setup, I will typically configure the router to function as a bridge and have IPCop (linux PC) do the dialing & routing for me.

Never seen the IP conflict problem though... Make sure that you have only ONE dhcp server on that subnet.
