Hi

I am going to get ADSL and one way satellite so it becomes uncapped!

Do I need to configure the Satellite software to download only from the sat and not ADSL?

Or is there a way to configure your ADSL account to only upload and not download?

Please help! :D

Moonbaby i run the same sytem. My sat link is via a VPN conextion. Once this is working mere by linking to the vpn connetion redirects the traffic via Sat. Wont know if Your system will be the same tho. Mine works this way. Sat is only bit slow, but boy sometimes early morning when usage is low this thing can GO.. It would take a few hours to download huge files but there is no shaping or cap so who cares. P2P worked great up to now and You have 24 hr connection lots of time to download. If in a hurry switch off vpn and dont worry loading will be fast (???). Do not know what Telkom will do.

Pupa I was gonna mention that one of my friends has satellite and that it is slower than adsl(but it did perform as advertised, which is good) and has huge pings.

He didn't like how the system worked(wasn't very easy to use I think) so he ended up abandoning the whole thing but that doesn't mean they'r all the same.

The point is it would be well advised to make sure that is what you want to do since the initial costs I believe are quite high.

What Satellite solution are you using Pupa?(I'll ask him what he used)

so I dont have to do any configuration settings?
I did not have to do anything. I would not think its is worth the investment if you no not have it yet. I had mine and keep it parralel for a while to see post Nov issues. Only advantageis
: Faster than dialup
: No cap or shaping

pupa some1 told me to get Netlimiter

but if u didnt have to do anything then i will try without netlimiter first!

I think its worth it because all uncapped adsl isp accounts are SHAPED and the satellite is not!

GPRS with satellite

I am living in an area where there is no ADSL or 3G available and I currently use GPRS with satellite and it cannot compare to ADSL but the performance is fine if compared to a dialup connection. I use a VPN connection to the satellite.

Welcome to MyAdsl, this is a good forum, lots of laughs, Info, Newscasts by forumites, opinions, adrenaline injections and all.

Sat did me good for Many Years difficult to part with it. Just waiting come November and see before I decide and then put up for sale when CAP and shape issues become s clearer. Otherwise can do me for another few Years. Maybe by then we will run 25Mbps, unshaped, uncapped that is if the Martians land in time (Sarcastic referal to Telkom)

Moonbaby Netlimiter is just a monitor program here you can limit the upload and download speeds of different connections on the PC or running sofware like Torrents ad gaming so You can allocate bandwidth. I never used it and cannot see the need for it really. I did test it and uninstalled it again

Countryboy - are you using Vodcom or MTN?

what r the costs like to go sattelitle, and how badly do you get hit on the latency type issues? also, what's the reliability like, uptime, SLA, "guarantees" etc?

I run satellite for downloading too, never goes lower than 16kb/s, but as said earlier, at low usage times it can FLY! My record, sustained for about 2 hours was 580k/s over satellite, now thats blits :) I think it was new years day if I remember correctly, normal overnight bursting is usually 30-80k/s though...

Costs about R300 a month

Yeah, I one day were also Dloading a huge file, prepared for a few hours wait as per normal and were surprised 20 min later to find it done, thought it was bad load, but it worked. Exception to the rule thought, only once in many years

I am also considering combining ADSL with one way satellite as soon as my ADSL is installed. I still have my Pent@Net card and dual-LNB from when I used to be with Tiscali. I only cancelled because I went to the UK for a while.

Which ISPs still offer one way satellite? M-Web/Tiscali do not offer it anymore.
