Hi, I would like to know what equipment is required for an ADSL self install, and where can I get it. According to some posts you need a splitter and filter to connect the modem. I have an ADSl modem that requires a RJ45 connection, but phone sockets are RJ11, so What do I need to convert it to RJ11. Also is the filter only required to connect the modem or must I put filters at each phone connection in the house. I would also like to know how long does it take to get ADSL in other areas, according to Telkom it takes about 6 weeks in Klerksdorp.

Your adsl modem should have place for RJ45(ethernet) which you connect using a standard network cable to your pc. Then a place for you to plugin your RJ11(your telephone line).

No converters are neccessary.

Filters must be used between each phone/fax/answering machine but not between your adsl modem...

Self install

Hi,

My modem only has a RJ45 and a USb port at the back, no RJ11. Its a Mecer Modem. It has a Telkom sticker at the bottom, I bought it on Bidorbuy. Please let me know if it will work.

How much did u pay for it? look like u have a router there

no wait, that made no sense :p

U sure its a ethernet port? Doesnt make sense for anything to have one usb and one ethernet port. Also doesnt make sense for it to have a telkom sticket if it isnt a modem

Self Install

Hi, It just says "USB ADSL Modem ANNEX-A " The telkom sticker has a ADSl Fault line tel number. IF you give your email address I'll email a pic of the port as well as the sticker, or is there a way to upload pics on this site.

you can upload pic's to imageshack.us and just post the link here ;)

Sounds like it's a modem for ADSL over ISDN, but I doubt Mecer would actually sell something in SA that wouldnt work here

Hi, Thanks for all the help. Where can I get the filters, I asked the lady at telkom but she didn't know anything about where to get it, She said that they just give a letter.

i didnt do the self install, but i got two filters from the local telkom shop. IIRC they were R40 ea. Go there again n talk to sum1 else. U only really need one filter. Get a splitter for ur socket.. then plug ur modem into one and put a filter on the other and run a line from that one splitting to ur other devices
