I applied for a DSL line at my home last week Thursday - when I asked the woman said 3 days to install - I doubted that but she insisted. Today I got a call from a guy from Telkom asking me if I wanted a free modem on the Self Install option.
I said sure but I don't want a contract. He says no contract.
I said Oh, and I don't want to use Telkom as ISP. He says you don't have to use Telkom as ISP. Use whoever you want.
I said whats the catch. He says no catch, no strings attach. Here's a number go fetch your modem, we're activating the line now.
I said @#$%^ me, I'll have some of that.
Is this for real? Anyone knows?

Yip. This is actually for real :) I had ADSL activated last week - free WiFi modem, no contract and Webafrica ISP :D

To my knowledge it is for real, due to the huge back logs telkom is punting self install, so as bonus for taking self install they give you a free wireless modem...

FOR THE LOVE OF GAY PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
WHERE IS THE EMOTICON THAT TARES THE HAIR OUTTA YOUR HEAD!!!!!!
WHEN I SPOKE TO THE W@NKERS I WAS TOLD I MISSED THE CUTTOFF DATE FOR SELF INSTALL!!!!

calm down shake...calm down - perhaps cos my dilemma is a little bit different. The flat I stay in never had a line, so the techie still has to come in though and set it up in my place - so ok I should pay something for having the dude there - BUT WHERE IS MY DAMN FREE MODEM!!! fu(k 'em!

Whats the number for the DSL helpdesk again at Telkunt!? I'm getting my God damn free modem!!!!!

Must keep head on straight -need smoke! So like many other tales here about are demonised monopoly I call the hellbound twirps up and get the response that - Sir it says here that you've got your own modem and that you PC blah blah
I tell the demon princess that I had to go for those options cos the troll at the Direct Store told me that I would have missed the date (which was told to me to be in mid-March I don't recall the exact date - but I know that it was not the 31st of March!)

So may they all fall into bundles of pigsh!t, rolled in thorns and be lit with castor oil!

Getting my own MSC Adsl modem or will consider running down stoke's street and paying the neighbour's kid to go in and steal his.....*sigh* *sulk*

LAWL .. I advised a friend that this was false ...
/me hides head in shame and also hides me ADSL modem

I'm still a bit uneasy about this whole affair and will only relax when I get the bill and all is as it should be.
O and I got a call last night from Telkom saying the ADSL has been activated on my line but it turned out it hasn't so I can't use the modem just yet.

Pls help.. I have done a manual installation where i upgraded to a 384mg line from dial-up..The problem is now the connection is even slower than before..?? I tried the link and they said it should take half an hour to get up to speed..It's been 5 days now and it is still very slow..Telkom is not helping and keeps telling me to do speed tests ...but it doesnt work it is tooo slow for a gamco speedtest!!

I had the same problem , how to still get self-install :

1. - First you'll need to cancel your current application.
2. - Apply for a normal line, installation fee = R300. (Two days to install)
3. - When you have your normal line, apply for ADSL.
4. - You can only get the free modem with a self-install when you already have an existing line.

Thanks, tried it after I read your post and got some weird answers from that thing, doesn't seem to work properly. But I'm certain Telkom hadn't done their part yet (DSL LED stays off), even though someone called me last night to inform me they have.
Went to Telkom and the woman called they guy at the exchange while I sat there, gave him the order no and told him to get on with it. He was unaware of the order, he said.
So we wait and hope!

I really can't believe they charge what they do for what I did yesterday when I did my self install.

You're not going to believe this - I just bumped into the woman from Telkom and guess what, she said I shouldn't have gotten a free modem and will be billed for it as I didn't sign up for a bundle!
I told her Telkom called me and offered me the modem, so she'll now check with someone if I can keep the thing!!
