Hey Hey! ;)

Telkom have now told me ADSL Self-Install will be available in my area by end of March 2006. Obviously if I wait then the R404 installation doesnt apply, but here is the questions.

1) Do you guys think Telkom will have SelfInstall ready by end March as they said (I went to Telkom Cape Gate and asked them)

2) How long do you think it will take for my ADSL line to be functional once I have ordered it with the Self Install option?

Once I go in, get the DSL Modem etc walk out what do Telkom need to do before the line is activated as a DSL line?

Thanks in advance!

probably not.. but maybe if you pinky promise with them!! :D

I am tired of waiting so I really hope they stick to their end March deadline.

where are you in cape town? i was told that my exchange won't be available until the end of may.

i'm going to be stealing wireless as a result, i think. pig****ers.

thats odd that "self install" will be available in March .... in general your area's exchange must be adsl ready ... If it is they just have 2 change some settings and you can "self install". So the question you should be asking them has ur line passed conformance testing

self install is pretty much pluggin in ur modem and putting in pots filters. once done u have to go2 www.telkomsa.co.za/verifyadsl ..... which on some cases might be anoyying as u may not have another source of internet

telkom phoned me right after i sent that post and said that they will be putting in my other phone line on *sunday*. so, we'll see. i know that people in my exchange have ADSL -- my bf works down the street, and my phone numer is only one digit different than theirs. but they moaned about not having the equipment and being out of ports in my exchange (021-448-xxxx). something else about which i call bull**** and told them so. i won't need filters on my pots lines though because the dsl is going to be on the second phone line.

I am in Sonstraal Heights (basically Durbanbille) 021-975-xxxx.
Telkom has had DSL here for almost a year now as far as I know, could even be longer, they can process my request but then I must pay the R404. Telkom said however that the SelfInstall will be an option for my exchange by end March.

Thats just what Telkom told me =/
I am just wondering if it is true, or will I go there end of month and they gonna tell me May like they said to lindito.

I think you got unlucky, go back and speak to someone else. When I ordered my dsl, i ordered it. they took details etc etc, after testing and crap they called back to confirm a date and only then do you tell them you want to do a self-install

Just what exactly is the diff between self install and normal install? I'm having ADSL done and the techie came out this morning. All he did was test the line from my house using his laptop and a ADSL modem. I still have to go buy micro filters for the normal phone lines myself. He didn't install anything just phoned Telkom and asked them to test the line.

The whole thing left me wondering if I'm paying R404 for nothing...

I will go to Telkom Cape Gate tommorow again to ask, and this time with this conversation printed out. :)

you/we are paying 404 for nothing.

when i got dsl in senegal. SENEGAL. they just gave me the modem, and said "by the time you get home, you'll be able to use it".

SENEGAL.

at the time i was living 2, maybe 3km from the sonatel multimedia office where i received my modem.

Ordered business ADSL for work on 8 Dec. Promised to be ready by end Jan.

Called them end Jan. Told the exchange needed to be replaced and would be ready end Feb.

Called them end Feb. Told they were waiting for parts from Finland. Crapped on the woman's head.

A week later a "technician" came to "install" the line. (He checked that it was working and downloaded his e-mail onto his laptop). He wasn't supposed to install it yet but was in the area and went against head office orders not to go ahead with the install.

Bottom line: Expect to wait for 3 months and maybe they'll suprise you after 11 phone calls in 2 months.

in the immortal words of Daffy Duck, "Shoot me now!"

i'm glad it's not just me that is screaming and hollering at these people. i think that i'm going to mention something on sunday (yeah right) when the tech is by putting in my other line. pig****ers. i'm giong to send dr ivy a bill for that R404 that isn't necessary and also a bill for the R477 each month for my "adsl line rental".
