Hi all,

I've just moved into my new flat and the phone line there wasn't used by the previous tenant. So I had telkom come out to activate the line, which they did this morning. Now I need to orer my ADSL but if possible I would like to just install it myself and save the R543 by not having telkom come out to my place.

Is there anything tricky that I should know about or is this farely simple to do? We wont be using the line for phone calls at all, it will only be used for the ADSL so I presume I dont have to worry about one of those micro filters?

Im guessing I just phone telkom, they do whatever they need to do to convert my line to ADSL, then I phone the ISP i've chosen, sign up etc, get my username/password, plug in my router and set a few things up, enter my isp username/password into the router and im good to go?

Am I missing anything that would warrant paying the R543 to have telkom come to my place. btw, i've got my own router so I wont be needing one from telkom.

Thanks.

Not really, no. Just did the same this past week except that I still needed to have a phone line installed as well!

Don't know how they justify the installation fee - I mean, a 100 bucks for the techie's petrol is one thing, but R543?? That's just daft... Erm, thinking about it, once it's up & running you will need to verify the DSL at http://www.telkom.co.za/verifyadsl

If you don't have your own account at that point you can do it with the Telkom guest account. Just don't ask me what their username/password is - maybe someone else can recall?

Great, thanks for the replies. Ill give it a go myself then.

The Telkom guest login account I used to verify my ADSL self install was:

Login : guest1@telkomadsl
Password : guest1

anyone know a way to find out your order number without phoning the call centre?

When you place the order you should get the order number at the same time.

Self install is the best option; there are some strings attached if you ask your ISP to order your ADSL for you.

Yeah, so far I cant think of anything that warrants paying R543 to have someone from Telkom come and plug my router into the wall. Especially since ill be using my linksys router and not one that telkom provides.

So ill give it a go myself and only call them if I cant come right.

You'll come right - if you've got the mental capacity to register on MyBB you can figure it out. If not, someone here can talk you through it. Save the R500, especially since Telkom won't touch your Linksys...

Now I just need to decide whether I should go for Axxess uncapped or not... :D

ordered my adsl but havnt heard anything yet if its activated and was wondering if its possible to be able to sync with the exchange and browse the telkom site but not be ready to verify the line to get going? i get a msg "your service application has already been processed" when trying to verify. What msg are you supposed to see?

Got the same... Popped my OpenWeb details into the router & everything was golden. Check if you can access http://www.sabc.co.za with the Telkom guest account (yes, it allows access to some sites other than Telkom's). If you can, I would hazzard that everything's 100% with your DSL.

when i did my self install, i couldn't believe that is what they charged R500+ for

The installs are mostly outsourced to smaller companies and this is what they charge!

meh, cant see sabc.co.za, just telkom. Used both a Do broadband account and axxess unshaped account and also just telkom.co.za on both. strange. maybe should just wait for confirmation about the line from telkom.

Was just about to say remember to get your order number when u phone them to convert the line - otherwise if u can use your phone or other type of connection im *fairly* sure your ADSL order number should be on the details page of your account on the Telkom website. Saved me some time getting it beforehand.

ye, just phoned telkom to ask, its actually much quicker. Must say the last 3 calls Ive made to them i havnt had to wait at all on the phone - picked straight up.

Bleh seeing as i only use my phone line for DSL i have no phone and had to resort to phoning the international number from my cell each time. They usually pick up very quick there also :D Cept during lunch of course!

Erm, you can phone the same 10210, 10219 whatever number from your cell. Besides, if you've got a DSL line you've got a phone line. Borrow someone's phone rotting in a drawer somewhere & phone them on it if the need arises, that way it doesn't cost you anything...

Aye that would have been much easier lol - unfortunately being in a complex cant really go door to door asking for a phone when u need to call them right then... ended up getting an old phone the worked wanted to chuck away that i keep spare for the delightful calls to the support centre...

quick silly Q, do you need the filters for the adsl to work or just for the phone to work together with the adsl?
