Hi all,

I moved to a new flat and had to order a new telephone line to get ADSL.

So I ordered to two 2gether. Obviously they have to sort out a line into my flat for me, and they charge u R300 and something odd for it and that is fine & understandable.

When I applied for ADSL with Tel line they asked me if I wanted to do self installation, abviously I said yes and filled the form in like that.

Now they just phoned me and told me this bull****, "that because I do not have a telephone line there they have to come install the ADSL themselves". I meen ffs, I dont want to pay R400 and something for a dude to come plug his Telkom modem in @ my house and see if he can make a connection. I can do that myself thank u. I'll even go and plug the cable into the DSLAM if they are 2 lazy.

My question is, can they do this? Force me to pay for an unnessary "installation" that is not needed.

I feel they just trying to trick dumb ppl out of more money. I'll know if my line is working thx u... :p

Telkom charged me installation when they installed because techies had to come out and swap lines around.

However, before my ADSL installation ever happened someone I spoke to at 10219 told me that since the "ADSL installation" they charge is solely for setting up your modem, etc, whatever they had to do to get the line operational, even if they had to come to your house, would not incur a charge.

That said, they naturally charged me anyway, so I called to dispute the charge and managed to get a credit.

I guess what it comes down to is even if you have to speak to 50 different people, find someone that will confirm the above and have them write it on the order in thick black marker, lol.

Alternatively, posting on Hello Peter seems to be attracting the people that have some power to see to your issues and enough of a clue to know how everything works in these slightly more technical scenarios. Maybe you'd have some luck there.

Good luck

When I did my self installation they still charged me for it. I complained and the charge was reversed. I think they try and trick people or hope people wont realise it and just pay. Scum bags

I think the techies are part of the problem. They come out to do some work at your house, and as far as they're concerned they just did an "ADSL installation" so they tick the little box on the form they give back to Telkom.

*shrug*

Never ascribe to malice, that which can be adequately explained by incompetence.

Awe shot. Tune them on the phone just now.

They not very cluedup, seem to think they need to come pull an extra "ADSL cable" into my house or something. But now the duder will spk with his manager 2morrow morning and get back to me.

Lol after I told him I'm not letting telkom ADSL techie into my house for that reason :p

Ok so the duder phoned me back and started tuning me something about Telkom policy regarding new installation of line and ADSL... thats before I got a bit pissed.

I've installed ADSL before on already existing lines but now I have to get a tel line to get ADSL @ my new place.

What exactly is the differense between adding ADSL onto a 5 year old telephone line and a newly installed line...?

Old line... connect my port & DSLAM @ exchange etc and I tested it myself...
New line... Install the line first, wait 10 secs, now it is the same as an old line, so connect my port & DSLAM @ exchange etc and I'll test if its working myself thx!

OMFG I'm telling u, I find it so hard to handle ppl and companies like this!
