I'm interested in what the various ISPs charge for ADSL line setup. I think I read somewhere that Telkom does it free, but I would rather go Mweb, because their uncapped 1Mb/s is superior. Does Mweb offer free ADSL line setup?

(I already have a normal phone landline, just never had ADSL setup on it before)

I know I could start on Telkom then switch to Mweb, but would rather not. I would only want to do that as a last resort.

Another question: if I were to cancel ADSL after a few months, could I drop the data as well as the monthly payments on the ADSL line, or is it not possible to drop the ADSL line as well, and start paying for it again only when I decide to use ADSL data again?

You don't have to pay a set up fee if you do a self install, which is pretty basic. I'm pretty sure you could do this with any ISP that resells ADSL lines.

Thanks, I think I'll go that route. What about my second question - stopping payments on the ADSL line if/when you no longer want to use it?

I believe both the line and data is month-to-month, so you can cancel whenever (30days notice might be applicable).

Good Morning, you can make application through MWEB for the installation of the ADSL line. The cost will depend on whether there is a self install option or if a technician needs to be dispatched by Telkom.

Upon cancellation you would be able to cancel to have the line and data portion cancelled. Then re-apply when you would like to activate it again.

I'm actually considering going Telkom because no-where can I see on the mweb 1Mb/s page http://www.mweb.co.za/productspricing/FullSpec/7844/850/1_Mbps_Uncapped_ADSL.aspx that it is unshaped.

It must be unshaped or I won't even consider it. I know Telkom's R199 offer is unshaped, so what is Mweb up to? The only thing that doesn't appeal to me on the Telkom line is the reduced speed from 6:00 - 22:00. I mean, why call it a 1Mbit line if it isn't?!

Edit: I know Telkom's page here says it's shaped http://www.do.co.za/broadband/offerings/telkom-internet-plans/uncapped/do-uncapped-up-to-1mbps/

...but I know someone who is using this line and it doesn't seem to be shaped. Torrents run at full speed, etc.

All consumer uncapped products are shaped. If you want an unshaped account you'll have to look at business accounts which are slightly more expensive.

Then explain to me why his home uncapped (which is definitely not business/consumer, he told me how much he is paying) with Telkom does not throttle torrents? Torrents are still downloading at full speed (well, 700+ kb/s) during peak hours of the day.

Believe me it's a shaped product. It may be that now the network has the capacity so that shaping doesn't have to kick in but if the need arises the network will shape the account. If you are happy with this arrangement then sign up.
