ADSL slowing down?

It all depends on which modem you have, Though they all work on the same basic principle as far as I know.

If its a USB modem, usually the software you get with the modem should have the status and all that somewhere.

If its an ethernet modem you need to "log into" the modem usually through your web browser or with software you got with it again.

The info you get from it is usually very helpful and can tell you a lot about your line condition etc if you know what to look for, it would also help Telkom because users could check there before the phone. Big problem I see is that if everyone knew where to look and what was going on, Telkom would have 30000 more phone calls a day because of unhappy customers.

Ignorance is Bliss

Sorry Vinesh, seems your righty :( just went through the manual for your modem and seems all you can check is up/downstream speeds.

Does anyone know of any software that one can use to test these things if your modem doesn't support it?

All I can find is DR DSL, and dont think any of us can buy it.. Though I sure wish Telkom would as it seems to be able to 10x more than most of their techs

ya :(
during the weekend I'll plug in my billion 5100 router hopefully that has those stats. thanks anyways, the thread is really informative :)

Email problems

I dont seem to be having a problem with disconnections, but over the last week my email downloads and uploads having been giving me hassles.. Whilst connected to DSL, the email delivery times out! This has not happened since I first got DSL about a month ago!

The speed of DSL192 also decreases alot a few weeks after its installed!
Getting downloads of about 19kb/s.... at max!

Well if you add 20% for overheads (which I know is usually to much) you should get about 19.2 kB/s So if you getting 19kB/s by Telkoms standards thats pretty good :), of course if you are only getting 19kb/s i'd plug my 56k modem back in if I was you.

Hmm ok I notice something else, since the rain aswell or its just telkom...

My lowest latency to saix.net has gone up by 5ms, nothing to die about but still unacceptable.

I talked to a Telkom techi guy and he said they lowered it because of connection issues. One can kind of understand that it would help because at a lower signalling rate the signal would not be as susceptable to interference and attenuation as with a high signalling rate.

What bothers me is that I am limited to 48KB/s. I think that telkom thinks we are morons! They think if we buy DSL 512kbps and get ~50KB/s we would think "yeah 512 ~ 50KB/s +overhead."

Bull!@#$!@# I want my 62KB/s and I will harass them till they give it to me. They are CLEARLY limiting my bandwidth to 48KB/s. I've checked netlimiter's results and I never get a single drop above 48KB/s. It's absolute rubbish. They think they can fool us, but they cant fool me! I've paid to much money for this to be fooled.

Dude you have more seriouse problems than me. ( But maybe not mentally ) There is clearly somethin wrong with your local loop or you are to far away from the exchange and getting signal ateniuation as a result.

What I suggest you do is the following ( Cause I have done it and it works )
1. Get a mic
2. Get some speakers for you computer
3. Get the phone close to your computer
4. Make sure you call in callmore time. They actually charge you for the phone call, I mean why would they not!? In 10 years time we will be talking about "Death and Telkom" and not "Death and Taxes" if you get my drift.

Procedure.
1. Switch the mic on
2. Call 0860008700 and follow the steps, the first guy that anwers never has a clue so ask for a ADSL person.
3. Now every time you hear that annoing music put the mic close to the earphone and boost it through your computer speakers.

Now you can roam around for hours while you wait for these chops to pick up the phone! Make some coffee kill some flies; do what you have to do but get them on the phone and start tj00ning!

glhf and beware of "Death and Telkom"
Well my download speed depending on the sites that i visit, reaches a max of 56-58k throughput. With regards to the line sync speeds i must say that about 1 year ago when i got my dsl line the speed was at the then 6Meg speed. Now the sync speed is at 384k / 640k - my browsing speed not affected much.

here is the stats off my router :
Local Tx Power: 11.34 dB
Remote Tx Power: 2.90 dB
Local Line Atten.: 35.5 dB
Remote Line Atten.: 21.5 dB
Local SNR Margin: 36.5 dB
Remote SNR Margin: 13.0 dB

I have a d-link dsl 504G (this model is being replaced by the 504T - issues with the telkom line sync speeds) . I should also mention that i am well within the 1km radius from the exchange ....... and not many people are using dsl in my area i think, except for business in the area. Are my line stats strange in anyway? But i should say the following.

One morning when i booted my machine ...... no internet at all .... so i rebooted the router ...... and the router could not sync ...... Called the reseller who, did his best to help me. I then called the telkom dsl help line and mentioned the exchange and the city where i was at and asked if telkom had changed the physical line sync speeds. I got a definite no ! Asked the if there was work being done in my area. again No! So logged a fualt had the techi's out. When they tested my line things was OK. I later found out that i had to use the patch for the 504G. I was suppose to pay for the callout of the techi's ...... but guess what telkom makes mistakes and they never billed me for the callout, probably because they realised that they did not inform me that the line sync speeds had changed.

Man does it feel good to get my own back from Telkom for a change!

I dont know whats up, but I can't get my test to run. it fails every time and tells me that Ip cannot be pinged, but a buddy of mine from the us can ping it fine with no loss and 300msec replies.

Anyone know what i can try. I have a router.

Thnx.
Ps. results i get
